The former England international has been overwhelmed by the public support he has received after revealing the ordeal in his autobiography Owning It
Ex-West Ham star Andy Carroll is grateful for the “massive” support he received after opening up on being sexually assaulted. The 37-year-old has spoken of his trauma following the incident, which saw his male assailant jailed for 20 months.
Five years passed between the incident and Carroll’s telling of it in his autobiography Owning It. The assault happened during a 2021 spell at hometown club Newcastle and the perpetrator was a friend of his former partner.
The striker, now at Dagenham and Redbridge, wrote that he was asleep when the incident took place. He claims to have ejected the man from his home and knocked him unconscious to prevent him from attempting to re-enter the property.
“I’ve been beating myself up about it and as soon as I’ve said it, the support that I’ve received has been massive,” Carroll told Football Uncensored.
“And I think that’s the main thing really for me, that if I said that five years ago when it happened, maybe I would have felt a lot better now and then got over it.
“I’m happy with who I am, I’m happy with how I’ve dealt with it, and I’ve got the support around me with my partner, my family and friends, and now the public.”
Carroll also described giving evidence in court, where the attacker was convicted of sexual offences and added to the sex offender register, as “humiliating and embarrassing and absolutely horrendous.”
“It was eating me alive inside for so long,” he added. “There’s certain things you can’t get over, and I’ll never, ever get over that.
“But now I know that people can see who I was then, in that time, and what I’ve been through and they help me and support me.”
Carroll spent seven years on West Ham’s books during his playing days, initially joining on loan from Liverpool before moving permanently for £15million. He scored 34 goals for the clubs in 142 appearances, including a memorable hat-trick in a 3-3 draw with Arsenal.
He rejoined boyhood club Newcastle in 2019, spending two seasons back in the north east of England. Spells in the Championship followed, at Reading and West Bromwich Albion, before the striker spent two years in France with Amiens and Bordeaux.
Carroll returned to England in 2025, taking over as a minority shareholder at Dagenham and Redbridge as well as joining the playing staff. He scored six times in 12 National League South appearances in his first year with the Daggers, who currently sit in the play-off spots a couple of months into his second season there.
