Amar’e Stoudemire has added an entirely different title to an already remarkable résumé.
The former NBA All-Star graduated Wednesday from the Miami Dade College School of Justice’s Basic Law Enforcement Academy and is set to serve with the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department, beginning a new chapter far removed from professional basketball.
Stoudemire, 43, completed months of law-enforcement training before receiving his badge. Miami Dade College also recognized him with the Harry “Coach” Everett Award for his contributions to the academy program during training.
NBA legend Amare Stoudamire has become a police officer in Miami, Florida.
When asked why he decided to join the department, he said that it is something he has always wanted to do since childhood. https://t.co/NpX4HvZhqp

For Stoudemire, the move into policing is not a spur-of-the-moment decision. He has said becoming a police officer was a childhood ambition, inspired in part by relatives who served in law enforcement. He described the profession as something rooted in family tradition and said the opportunity to protect and serve the community was one of the main reasons he pursued it.
The career change comes shortly after another major milestone. Stoudemire was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame earlier this year, capping a basketball career that included six NBA All-Star selections and the 2003 Rookie of the Year award.
Across 846 NBA regular-season games, Stoudemire averaged 18.9 points and 7.8 rebounds while playing for the Phoenix Suns, New York Knicks, Dallas Mavericks and Miami Heat. His final NBA season came in Miami in 2015-16 before he later continued his playing career overseas.
Now, a decade after his last NBA season, Stoudemire is back in South Florida for a very different reason.
