Halo: Combat Evolved on the Nintendo 64 is something that never should have happened, and yet we’re sort of glad that it did.

When it launched back in 2001, Halo: Combat Evolved revolutionised first-person shooters. Gamers had never played anything like it, and you could argue that its success was single–handedly responsible for the Xbox brand.

Years later, Xbox has shown its gratitude by handing the franchise off to Activision…

However, what if you combined this revolutionary shooter with another revolutionary shooter? Halo 64 is your answer.

What is Halo 64 and how on Earth does it work?

Halo 64 is a demake of Halo: Combat Evolved. A demake is a game that’s been remade for a console from the previous generation, and we’ve seen other examples of this with both Halo: Combat Devolved and Super Mario 64 on the Atari Jaguar.

In this case, the game is essentially a cross between the first Halo game and GoldenEye 007, which supports multiplayer and firefight.

The firefight mode is especially cool as that never existed in the real version of the game, though as a final farewell to the fans, Halo Studios is reportedly adding it to Halo: Campaign Evolved later this year as a free update.

As for the multiplayer mode, it supports four players in either PvE or PvP like GoldenEye 007, with loads of maps to choose from. The gameplay is also comparable, though plenty of Halo essentials have been added, like energy shields, and of course the weapon sandbox.

All in all, it’s an impressive demake. It might not be getting an official release, but neither are the rest of Halo Studios’ planned games, so I guess that makes them even..

Halo 64 had me on the hook at first until I saw what was at the other end of the line

Halo 64 was made with decompiled code from Halo: Combat Evolved and has also received assistance from AI. I’ve covered my distaste of AI quite extensively during my time at GAMINGbible, and I don’t condone it for this project either.

It’s disappointing because I love the idea. I’m a big fan of demakes, but more and more fan-made projects are using AI and I simply can’t get behind them. Game design is such a creative field and in my humble opinion, I don’t think AI tools have any place in it, even if they’re only being used for the tasks no one wants to do.

Nevertheless, there are bound to be plenty of gamers out there who don’t mind AI performing mundane tasks such as coding, so for those people you’re more than welcome to check the game out for yourself through its GitHub page.

You’ll need a legally obtained copy of the original Halo: Combat Evolved released for the Xbox. Halo: The Master Chief won’t work.
