Filip Hrgovic is moving closer to a home fight in Croatia against Frank Sanchez, although a bigger offer could still change those plans. Sanchez remains the expected opponent, with an announcement potentially coming soon.
Frank Warren revealed that his team has been working on bringing Hrgovic home. The Croatian heavyweight’s appearance in the ring after Daniel Dubois’ victory over Fabio Wardley drew attention, but Warren’s update puts Sanchez first in the current plans.
“He asked us; he said that his dream was to fight in Croatia, and we’ve been working on that,” Warren said to BoxNation. “I think we’ll be close to announcing something very soon.”
Warren did not provide a date or name a venue. His comments suggest the Croatia event is progressing, rather than being ready to announce.
Asked whether Sanchez would be the opponent, Warren pointed to Hrgovic’s obligation to face him. He also left an opening for negotiations if another opportunity appeared.
“That’s the fight that he has an obligation to, unless something else came up that was big,” Warren said. “Then we’d have to sit down with Frank Sanchez and discuss the matter, but that’s where we are at the moment.”
That qualification keeps a bigger fight in play, but it comes with a condition. Warren would need to speak with Sanchez’s side before changing direction. Nothing in the interview suggests those discussions have happened or that an alternative opponent has been agreed.
Hrgovic getting into the ring after Dubois’ win makes a rematch an obvious talking point. However, Warren did not identify Dubois as the fighter who could alter the Croatia plans. Reading his remarks as confirmation of that route would go beyond what he offered.
The next announcement should establish whether Hrgovic gets both parts of the current proposal: a fight on home soil and Sanchez in the opposite corner. Until then, Sanchez remains the opponent Warren is working toward.
