President Donald Trump had a tense exchange with a reporter at his Halloween party at Mar-a-Lago on Saturday night.
The president briefly took questions in the ballroom of his Palm Beach resort, flanked by Secret Service agents and surrounded by partygoers in top hats, feathered headdresses, wings and sparkles.
“Do you expect to go back to war with Iran this week,” a reporter asked the president, who said he came dressed as “Donald Trump.”

“Why would you ask such a stupid question?” Trump snapped back, indicating that the reporter was from The New York Times.
“Let’s say I did, would I tell you? Let’s say I didn’t, would I tell you?” Trump said, throwing his hands up in the air. “I can’t tell you that…It’s not a question for The New York Times.”

The president has long had a combative relationship with the press, launching personal attacks on reporters, seeking to bar them from the White House and filing multimillion-dollar lawsuits against media outlets. Last month, he berated The Independent’s Andrew Feinberg in the Oval Office, calling him a “sick person” who “better be careful.”

Speculation has mounted for weeks that Trump, 80, will launch a new offensive against Iran following the midterm elections on Tuesday, which will determine which party controls the House and the Senate.
U.S. officials warned several Gulf allies to prepare for a short, intense military campaign after Election Day as Trump weighs renewed strikes on Iranian infrastructure and nuclear sites, two diplomats briefed on the matter told The Associated Press this week.

The president also reportedly met with top military leaders on Thursday, including Admiral Brad Cooper, the commander of U.S. Central Command.

“We may do another little Epic Fury,” Trump said at a rally on October 23, referring to the U.S.-Israeli bombing campaign this past spring. “Or they’ll agree.”

Eight months into the war, large-scale attacks have largely paused, but the fragile lull has left no clear end to the conflict in sight.
The war has led to the deaths of at least 18 U.S. service members and wounded hundreds more. It has also reportedly cost the U.S. military at least $47 billion and dramatically driven up fuel prices. Multiple polls indicate the war is broadly unpopular.
Polls also suggest that the Republican Party could endure severe losses on Election Day, amid voter frustration over the war and the cost of living, potentially costing them their House and Senate majorities.
