The Worlds 2026 Quarterfinals are just around the corner, kicking off on Tuesday, November 3, with an LPL civil war between Top Esports and Invictus Gaming. Both teams secured their spots in the Knockout Stage with 3-1 records, setting up a clash between the LPL’s third and fourth seeds. This matchup also guarantees that at least one Chinese team will reach the semifinals of this year’s World Championship.
Top Esports vs Invictus Gaming: An Unexpected Clash
These two teams now find themselves facing off in the Worlds 2026 quarterfinals, a stage where few expected either of them to be.
TES entered the tournament without their starting top laner Cheng “ZUIAN” Zi-Hao, who was unable to secure a visa for the United States and had to be replaced at the last minute by Bai “369” Jia-Hao, who had not played competitively since March. On top of that, TES have built quite a reputation for choking on the international stage, but this year’s Worlds seem to be a different story for the Chinese squad.
As for IG, it has been anything but a quiet year, with the jungle being the only position that has not undergone a roster change, as Yan “Wei” Yang-Wei remained with the team throughout the season. IG arrived at Worlds as Chinese Seed 4 and surrounded by doubts, but have managed to put together some solid performances so far.
TES’ Worlds run began with a defeat against Hanwha Life Esports in Round 1, before bouncing back with three impressive victories over Anyone’s Legend, G2 Esports, and Bilibili Gaming, taking down the LPL’s first and second seeds as well as Europe’s top seed.
IG followed a similar path, although arguably against more manageable opposition. After an opening loss to Gen.G, IG went on to secure three consecutive victories against Team Secret Whales, HLE, and LYON, defeating the LCP’s first seed alongside the second seeds from Korea and North America.
A Close Head-to-Head
Looking at the head-to-head record between these two teams, the rivalry is incredibly close, with IG holding a slight edge. TES was founded in early 2018, marking the beginning of their encounters. Nearly nine years and over 100 games later, IG have won 52 games compared to TES’s 50. In terms of series, IG lead 14-11 in BO3s, while both teams have won five BO5s each.
Looking more specifically at 2026, the rivalry has been just as close, with IG winning four series, including one BO5, while TES have claimed three victories, also including a BO5. Of their seven encounters this year, six took place in the LPL, with the only exception coming at the Esports World Cup.
The Keys to the Match
This all-LPL clash promises to be a very special matchup, with plenty of fighting expected and interesting battles across literally every role. In the top lane, both players have been in good form, with 369 delivering some decisive performances, particularly on Ambessa in the victory over G2, while TheShy has had a few difficult moments. In the jungle, both Chinese players have fairly similar profiles, favoring aggressive early-game play and thriving in skirmishes.
The mid lane could be where the difference is made. In my opinion, Song “Rookie” Eui-jin has been having a pretty solid Worlds so far and will need to rely on his experience to push the tempo and secure the lane priority his team needs. As for the bot lane, I believe IG have the edge on paper, especially thanks to the form of Zi “JiaQi” Jia-Qi, who has been performing at an incredibly high level in his first Worlds appearance. However, Yu “JackeyLove” Wen-Bo remains a player who knows how to step up in the biggest matches.
To conclude, I expect this to be a very close series, potentially the tightest quarterfinal alongside Dplus KIA vs Bilibili Gaming. I would give IG a slight edge, with around a 55-60% chance of winning compared to 40-45% for Top Esports. However, this could easily go either way, and this all-Chinese battle should produce a strong semifinal contender, who will go on to face the winner of Gen.G vs LYON.
