Michael Carrick is the overwhelming favourite to be the first Premier League manager sacked, although the odds for another have shifted dramatically in the last 24 hours.
Carrick is under immense pressure to turn a dire situation around at Old Trafford. His Manchester United side followed up a dismal 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth with a 2-0 loss to Chelsea, days after the club placed its faith in the 45-year-old to continue in the hot seat.
The Red Devils slipped into the relegation zone briefly on Saturday before Crystal Palace’s 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. Alarmingly, the result at Stamford Bridge was their ninth match without a win in all competitions, making it increasingly likely that he’s the first top-flight manager sacked this season.
Premier League next manager sack odds as Matthias Jaissle becomes one of the favourites
According to Oddschecker, Carrick is 8/13 with William Hill to be relieved of his duties at Old Trafford, only months after signing a two-year deal with the club.
Pierre Sage, meanwhile, is priced at 11/4 with the same bookmaker to be sacked by Palace after their poor start to the season. Sage replaced Oliver Glasner in the summer and has only collected seven points from a possible 27 in the Premier League.
Third on the list is Regis Le Bris at Sunderland, who have experienced an alarming decline following a seventh-place finish last term – currently bottom of the league with five points from nine matches.
It also appears their North East rivals Newcastle United are mulling over Matthias Jaissle’s future, too, after their abysmal performance against Everton.
Newcastle were completely outplayed by David Moyes’ side in a 1-0 defeat at St James’ Park and, instead of taking some of the responsibility, Jaissle expressed his bewilderment after witnessing a display that relied heavily on long balls.
“Long balls was not the plan. It’s something we need to work on,” the German said.
“We lack confidence; to come out of that, we need to stick together. We need to make a fast learning curve in the right direction. This is now the next step to clearly analyse it in-depth, and ask why we could not start the game as we originally planned.”
A second home defeat on the bounce and calling out his players for not following the structured, vertical football he had worked to implement has only placed increasing pressure on the 38-year-old, who is 13/2 to be the first manager axed after receiving boos from large sections of the crowd on Monday night.

Man Utd stance on Michael Carrick sack revealed
Jaissle will want to turn a glum period into positivity in the coming weeks, as will Carrick, who has been given home clashes against Roma (November 3) and Aston Villa (November 8) to prove his worth before the international break.
Fabrizio Romano confirmed on his YouTube channel that United’s hierarchy intends to “trust” the Englishman for the next two matches and will then assess his situation.
“Manchester United’s intention is to trust Michael Carrick for these games. Obviously, let’s see how things go against Roma, but the general intention is to trust Carrick for the upcoming matches,” Romano said.
“Then the international break is coming. So, obviously, there will be a longer period of time during which they can assess the situation and make a final decision regarding the managerial position.”
According to Romano, a “crazy” turn of events would need to unfold for INEOS to consider sacking the club’s legendary midfielder for the break.
“At the moment, the feeling at Man Utd is that Michael Carrick has very good chances of surviving this crisis and remaining in charge for the upcoming games.
“Then, the period around the international break is going to be important. They will assess all the options and possibilities, involving the owners, the directors and everyone at the club, before making a decision about the future of Man Utd.
“But, in general, with the international break approaching, that is going to be the moment when Manchester United can properly assess the situation, unless something crazy happens again and they continue failing to win games over the coming weeks.”
