Justin Gaethje is the UFC lightweight champion, but it didn’t come without danger.

On Sunday, Gaethje authored one of the greatest upsets in UFC history, stopping Ilia Topuria in the main event of UFC White House to claim the undisputed lightweight title. It was a long time coming for Gaethje, who is a two-time interim champion, but had twice lost undisputed title fights. This was almost certainly Gaethje’s last shot to win undisputed gold in the UFC, and he and coach Trevor Wittman had a very specific game plan to get over that hump.

“The game plan was to use our footwork,” Wittman told Daniel Cormier afterward. “Use our open foot to dig outside. Also, use left angles when we’re coming in to pressure. Just because, when he starts going back like that [turns his body away], it’s dangerous. Very dangerous. If you open up, he’s very good at opening the shoulder and finding hooks. So, the game plan was to pull him in. Not use low kicks in the beginning, use high kicks and things like that, just to make him respect, and try to kick his power hand.

“But in most of the fights where he gets tired, he starts to go from this point, where he’s [leaning forward], to here [leaning back]. Once he gets here, then it’s a jabbing war. Once I saw him go to the rear leg, I was like, get on, Justin.”

The game plan could scarcely have worked better. Gaethje busted Topuria’s right eye up early in the fight with his jab, and continued to land thudding blows to “El Matador.” But it wasn’t perfect. In the second round, Topuria dropped Gaethje with a vicious body shot that could have changed his fortune, but Wittman says this is when Topuria made his biggest mistake.

“That heat, that humidity, Justin’s a gangster. Overcoming the body shot, I think Ilia made a big mistake there, taking Justin to the ground,” Wittman said.“ I think that was a big mistake on Ilia’s part, going to the ground. Because Justin was really hurt. He was hurt.

“And Justin’s just a durable guy. He’s very smart in situations. He knows when to take breaks. There’s times in the fight — the third and the fourth round — where I was like, ‘Stop taking breaks! You’ve got to fight!’ But easier said than done.”

Gaethje managed to survive to the end of the round, and that’s when momentum shifted completely in his favor. After the second round, Topuria was exhausted, and for the next 10 minutes, Gaethje battered him around the cage, breaking both of Topuria’s orbital bones and ultimately causing Topuria’s corner to stop the bout before the fifth round. It’s the crown jewel in a Hall of Fame career for Gaethje, and it came on the biggest stage possible. And Wittman could not be prouder.

“I think Justin is one of those guys that I think no one deserves it more than him,” Wittman said. “For this platform, and how many times he’s fought for the title, and just put it up on a pedestal. Just go out there and fight.”
