Fans of the horror breakout film Obsession are split on whether actress Inde Navarrette should go for Best Lead Actress or Best Supporting Actress at the 2027 Oscars. While the movie continues to break box office records, both critics and audiences have universally praised Navarrette’s Oscar-worthy performance as Nikki Freeman, a supernaturally twisted friend-turned-lover who switches between being devoted and horrifying (sometimes both). However, some question whether she would have a better chance of winning in the Supporting Actress category rather than the Lead Actress one, while others argue whether her role in the movie counts as a lead performance in the first place.
Should Inde Navarrette campaign for Best Actress or Best Supporting Actress?
Whether Inde Navarette should shoot for Best Actress or Best Supporting Actress at the 2027 Oscar depends on a lot of factors — some technical, some practical, and some strategical.
A poll on the r/oscarrace Reddit reveals how divided fans are on how Focus Features should angle her Oscar campaign. Out of 649 votes, 193 believe she is the lead actress of Obsession and should campaign as such, 252 think she is a supporting actress and should campaign as such, and 181 agree that she is a lead actress but should campaign as a supporting actress anyway.
The case for Navarrette going for Best Supporting Actress Oscar
From a technical standpoint, many argue that Nikki Freeman is actually a supporting character since the movie is framed from Baron “Bear” Bailey’s perspective. The majority of the scenes that Nikki are in have Bear at her side or playing opposite to her. Said another way, she is rarely featured alone or in scenes with the other characters of the movie without him.
From a pragmatic viewpoint, the Best Supporting Actress category tends to have less competition than the Best Actress one, which would make it easier for Navarrette to win. Other potential nominees in the field include Mariana di Girolamo in Wild Horse Nine, Anne Hathaway in Verity, Sandra Hüller in Digger, Penélope Cruz in The Bride, and Zendaya in The Odyssey.
While horror movies (and comedies) tend to get the short end of the stick at the Oscars, Amy Madigan won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her performance in Weapons at this year’s show. Navarrette, 25, is a relatively young actress and Obsession is only her second feature film after 2020’s Wander Darkly, so the perception from the Academy could be that she might not be ready for the Best Actress category yet.
The case for Navarrette going for Best Lead Actress Oscar
On the other hand, Nikki has enough screentime in Obsession to count as the lead actress in the film. Her performance, especially her expressive facial gestures and compulsive behavior, is necessary as the driving force of the movie.
More than that, critics believe that Navarrette should be in the conversation for a Best Actress nod. Variety notes that a nomination for her in the category would be rare since “only six Latina women have ever been nominated for best actress,” while Gold Derby says that “the internet is already rooting for her to win Best Actress.” Her breakout performance in the film has led to an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, so it looks like Focus Features has her for the Best Actress category in mind.
The field for Best Actress is more competitive, with possible nods going to Sandra Hüller in Rose, Renate Reinsve in Fjord, and Emily Blunt in Disclosure Day. However, a Kalshi bet (as of June 17) has Navarrette in very strong contention — in third place with a 52% chance — for a Best Actress nomination, showing how well people are responding to her performance despite her being a late entry to the field. Even if she doesn’t win the Academy Award for Best Actress at the end of the day, simply being nominated in the category would serve to catapult her budding career.
Either way, Focus Features and Blumhouse will likely wait a few months to see how each category shakes out before committing to a decision on Navarette’s Oscar campaign.
