Brendan Fraser’s upcoming space thriller has cast The Newsroom’s iconic star. The two-time Emmy winner joins Fraser in a film that promises to blend cosmic peril with personal stakes.
Starman cast expands as Brendan Fraser’s sci-fi thriller moves forward
Jeff Daniels has signed on to star opposite Brendan Fraser in Starman, Deadline reported. Filming is scheduled to begin this summer under the direction of Josh Wakely.
Daniels reportedly steps into the role of Ed Watkins, a character described as the fiercely protective co-leader of a transformational company. He built the enterprise with Tom Adams, the visionary technologist played by Fraser, a man who ultimately means more to Watkins than the business itself.
Starman’s story will have Adams as an architect of humanity’s future. He spearheads a historic expedition to Mars, taking himself to the very edge of a new frontier. The mission derails when unforeseen events leave him stranded millions of miles from Earth. What follows is not simply a struggle for survival but an urgent race driven by love.
This emotional core distinguishes Starman from a purely technical survival drama. While Daniels previously navigated Martian rescue efforts as the head of NASA in Ridley Scott’s The Martian, his role here carries a far more intimate weight. The narrative suggests a profound bond between the two men, allowing Daniels to explore a personal connection that was absent from his earlier, more procedural space film.
David S. Goyer, known for writing Batman Begins and the Blade trilogy, executive produces. The film is a Grace: A Storytelling Company production, produced by Wakely, Rebecca Graham, and Eddie Vaisman, whose recent credits include Fraser’s Searchlight film Rental Family. Financing comes from Tarek Sherif and Ryan Graves, with Anton handling international sales.
Moreover, Brendan Fraser’s journey back to leading roles has been one of Hollywood’s most celebrated recent narratives. After dominating the 1990s cinema with hits like The Mummy, his comeback Best Actor Oscar win for The Whale made him one to look out for. Now, Starman represents another big step forward.
