Former Love Island USA contestants have shared their experiences regarding the role producers play behind the scenes. Several contestants described how production decisions can influence the show’s internal dynamics. Based on their accounts, producers may guide certain interactions, although the contestants said they ultimately make their own decisions.
Alexandra Stewart and others break down Love Island scripting rumors
A few former Love Island contestants have addressed speculation that producers script the reality series. While they said producers do not directly script contestants’ actions, their accounts suggest that production may encourage certain conversations or interactions. Multiple former contestants shared similar experiences.
Alexandra Stewart, a former contestant, claimed that producers instructed Bryce to speak with Kayda. “It’s because Zach said out loud in one of the first weeks of Love Island that he’s closed off,” Stewart said in a recent TikTok. “That is like illegal in Love Island world. You will get pulled out and get a stern talking to and be reminded that you’re there to talk to all of the people, and closing off is quite literally not really an option that early on.”
She added that the rest of the cast also received the “same talk.” According to Stewart, this led both her partner and co-star Elizabeth Webber’s partner to begin speaking with other women. “Suddenly, the two boys… were saying that they were open and weren’t closed off,” she added. “That’s because we all got yelled at, and they said they would send us home if we didn’t talk to other people.”
Kaylor Martin, another former contestant, added that producers arranged conversations between islanders. “They’re not holding a gun to your head and saying, ‘Go off to Casa and hook up with other girls,’” she said. “Sure, they’ll set up chats and who’s talking to who, and things like that.”
Martin also said that producers discouraged her from making her relationship with Aaron Evans official.
Carsten “Bergie” Bergersen also discussed the production process in a TikTok video. He claimed that producers had ways of controlling the behaviour of contestants. “One thing I got in trouble for when I was on Love Island season five was jumping in the pool to start my day,” he said. “All the islanders get up, I went and just jumped straight into the pool, and you’re not allowed to do that, I guess.”
So, with everything in place, it does seem there is enough influence on the contestants from the Love Island producers. However, there seems to be a push, but not any concrete imposition. So, it seems that the idea is to direct the contestants towards a favorable outcome. It is also perhaps done in a way to keep things interesting.
Love Island Season 8 streams exclusively on Peacock.
