James Gunn might have accidentally revealed a spoiler for Man of Tomorrow. While clarifying one upcoming project’s place in the DCU’s continuity, Gunn might have inadvertently offered a clue about which characters could survive the events of his Superman sequel.
James Gunn has revealed that since it is a mockumentary, The People v. Gorilla Grodd is going to jump all over the timeline with its archival footage and more recent interviews. However, the story is going to chronologically take place after the events of Man of Tomorrow.
Since Jimmy Olsen is the show’s central figure, some fans have interpreted Gunn’s comment as a possible indication that Superman’s pal survives Man of Tomorrow.
James Gunn’s timeline clarification adds another piece to the DCU puzzle
In an interview with Screen Rant, Skyler Gisondo, who portrays Jimmy Olsen in the DCU, said he believed The People v. Gorilla Grodd would take place between Superman and Man of Tomorrow. However, James Gunn later clarified the show’s place in the timeline on Threads.
He wrote, “Well, no. I mean it’s a true crime series so it jumps all over the place. But overall in continuity, it’s after MoT (and won’t come out until then).”
This immediately caused fans to come to the conclusion that Jimmy Olsen was going to survive the events of Man of Tomorrow. Man of Tomorrow is going to see Lex Luthor and Superman team up to take on Brainiac.
The film will also see a slew of heroes return from Superman. These include Mister Terrific, Guy Gardner’s Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, and Supergirl. Notably missing is the newest member of the Justice Gang, Metamorpho. Fans will instead see John Stewart’s Green Lantern and Blue Beetle crossover with Superman from other projects.
Given the scope of heroes that are assembling, possibly to go up against Brainiac, it can be stated that the assault on Earth by Brainiac’s forces will be nothing less than devastating. If Jimmy does survive, it would leave open the possibility that other characters could die or disappear during the conflict.
