A streaming giant has won an intense Hollywood bidding war to secure the feature film rights to Sesame Street. The deal ends a year-long contest that saw major studios competing to bring Big Bird and friends back to the big screen.
Major streamer acquires rights to Sesame Street movie
Netflix already held the television rights to the iconic children’s series, which it acquired in May 2025. This film deal now brings the entire Sesame Street universe fully under its control (via The Hollywood Reporter).
The project will be produced by Rideback, the company behind billion-dollar live-action adaptations of Lilo & Stitch and Aladdin. Rideback’s Jonathan Eirich and Michael Lofaso had already been collaborating with Sesame Workshop on an animation project, giving them an early advantage in securing the feature rights. Sesame Workshop will also serve in a producer capacity.
Securing the rights proved to be a complex battle. After Sesame Workshop signed with talent agency CAA last autumn, the contest initially became a three-way fight between Netflix, Universal, and Warner Bros. Warner Bros., which held the feature rights for roughly a decade without moving a project into production, exited the race early amid acquisition turmoil.
That left Universal as Netflix’s chief rival. The studio had attached The Daniels. The Oscar-winning duo behind Everything Everywhere All at Once to produce alongside Phil Lord and Chris Miller. Ultimately, Netflix prevailed. Sesame Workshop responded favourably to Rideback’s vision for the material. No filmmaker is currently attached to the project.
The franchise last hit theatres with The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland in 1999, following 1985’s Follow That Bird. By locking down the film rights, Netflix now commands the entire screen depiction of a show that has educated and delighted children since its PBS debut in 1969. The deal hints at serious ambition to reimagine a cultural institution for streaming audiences worldwide.
