It looks like kryptonite isn’t the only thing Supergirl has to worry about after receiving a less than favorable box office forecast. A week ago, the DCU follow-up to David Corenwet’s Superman, where Milly Alcock’s Supergirl made a brief cameo, received a lowered prediction. And now the superhero blockbuster has suffered yet another blow. Directed by Craig Gillespie and produced by James Gunn and Peter Safran, the spacefaring Supergirl is angling itself to be quite different to Superman and is slated to release nationwide on June 26, 2026.
Supergirl is expected to be outmatched by other blockbusters
One final box office prediction for Supergirl has the film earning only $48 million, or more specifically in the range of $39 million to $51 million, in its domestic opening weekend from June 26 to June 28.
This projection is based off a June 19 report from BoxOfficeTheory, which is about a 6% decrease from its numbers the week before that had the film bringing in $51 million, or somewhere between $47 million and $58 million. This shows an unfortunate downward trend for the DC Studios production, which started with an even higher forecast that went up to $65 million from the site.
The report reveals several reasons for the lowered confidence in Supergirl. Various reviews on social media had “positive-to-mixed reactions” and pre-sale trends “point toward a front-loaded weekend with Thursday previews likely to land ahead of The Marvels ($6.6 million).” The forecast admits that its $48 million prediction is actually “bullish” and that it could only rake in $40 million in its weekend debut.
Other box office experts have provided predictions for the movie that are slightly more optimistic but still show a falling trend overall. A June 19 report from BoxOffice Pro has the film having an opening range from $45 million to $55 million. Meanwhile, box office expert Matthew Belloni from Puck shares on X (formerly Twitter) that pre-release tracking has it “sitting at $51 million for the 3-day opening, per NRG,” a respected research firm that tracks the entertainment industry.
It should be noted that while Supergirl has a lower production budget than its predecessor Superman had, it’s not by much. Deadline reports that it cost $175 million to make, about $25 million less than the Corenswet-led movie, and that will be profitable once it crosses the $315 million benchmark at the global box office. (The typical break-even point for a film, though, is 2.5 times its budget, so the film may need to go past the $435 million mark instead here.)
That said, its current prediction of $48 million to $51 million for its domestic start suggests that it has a tough road ahead to meet that mark. Comparisons can be made to 2023’s The Marvels, which had a $46 million domestic opener and made $206.1 million worldwide, or this year’s Mortal Kombat II, which had $38.5 million domestic start and made $129 million worldwide.
More importantly, Supergirl is facing stiff competition from many other summer blockbusters. The most prominent contenders are two family-friendly animated sequels: Pixar’s Toy Story 5, which has already had an impressive $160 million domestic start, and Illumination’s Minions & Monsters, which comes out only five days after Supergirl does and has a higher predicted range of $57 million in its domestic opener, as noted by the latest BoxOfficeTheory report. The slapstick comedy Jackass: Best and Last shouldn’t be counted out either, as it arrives on the same day on June 26 and is predicted to have a domestic opener of $15 million, which is about a third of Supergirl’s. Then with multiple films premiering over the following month, including Young Washington (June 3), Evil Dead Burn (June 10), the live-action Moana (June 10), and The Odyssey (June 17), the superhero film may not be as leggy as originally anticipated.
