The upcoming live-action Magic School Bus has found its Ms. Frizzle. The upcoming Legendary Entertainment movie will adapt the beloved books and animated TV show from the ’90s.
Who has been cast as Ms. Frizzle in the live-action Magic School Bus movie?
Elizabeth Banks has been cast as Ms. Frizzle in the live-action Magic School Bus film (via The Hollywood Reporter). This isn’t the first time that Banks has been involved with the project, as she was cast as Ms. Frizzle in a version being developed by Universal Pictures in 2020. The character is the protagonist of The Magic School Bus series, leading her students on science-focused adventures across time and space.
The film will be written and directed by Rob Letterman, who has previously adapted children’s properties for the screen. Letterman’s previous directorial efforts include Detective Pikachu, Gulliver’s Travels, and more.
The Magic School Bus movie will be produced by Legendary in collaboration with Scholastic, Brownstone Productions, and Marc Platt Productions. Letterman has already helmed one Scholastic book series before with the Goosebumps TV series, which ran between 2023 and 2025.
The Magic School Bus books were created by Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen, with the first book published in 1986. A TV series adaptation debuted in 1994 and ran for 4 seasons. Lily Tomlin lent her voice to the role of Ms. Frizzle. Following the show’s ending, a revival series debuted on Netflix in 2017, with Tomlin reprising her role. Both the original and the sequel series were critically acclaimed.
Banks has appeared in The Miniature Wife, The Better Sister, and the Wet Hot American Summer franchise. Banks also played Rita Repulsa in the 2017 feature film adaptation of Power Rangers. Besides acting, Banks has also directed a number of features, including the Charlie’s Angels reboot, Cocaine Bear, Pitch Perfect 2, and more. She will also lead a new Apple TV comedy from Liz Heldens.
