In her 2012 song “The Lucky One,” Taylor Swift described the life of a celebrity who escapes the spotlight and chooses “the rose garden over Madison Square.”
For her upcoming wedding with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce — as highly publicized a union as it gets — the global pop star is reportedly doing the opposite.
On the surface, a major-league sports arena in Midtown Manhattan built atop the heavily trafficked Penn Station might seem like an improper venue for a highly private affair requiring immense security. But there are several reasons why Madison Square Garden, home of the NBA’s New York Knicks and NHL’s New York Rangers, in fact makes sense to host the Swift-Kelce ceremony and accompanying events, which are reportedly expected to attract upwards of 1,000 guests starting Thursday.
To start, the self-described “World’s Most Famous Arena” is no stranger to welcoming A-list celebrities. During the Knicks’ recent run to the NBA championship, high-profile attendees at home playoff games included Swift, Timothée Chalamet, Ben Stiller, Kylie Jenner, Spike Lee and President Donald Trump.

Most celebrities visiting Madison Square Garden enter on 31st Street between Seventh and Eighth Avenue, where multiple VIP entrances are located, and can take an elevator up to a suite. But the building has other access points that could be useful throughout an apparent multiday celebration for Swift and Kelce, who were engaged in August 2025. It features a unique five-story ramp that private vehicles can drive up to the arena level, though that wouldn’t be a feasible option for all of Swift’s guests as too many cars at the top of the ramp can pose a fire hazard.
The building offers other obvious privacy perks, too. With a closed roof, aerial cameras won’t be able to capture photographs of the event. And Swift has applied for permits through the city to close nearby streets, the New York Times reported, with hundreds of police officers expected to patrol the area.
Controlled by Madison Square Garden Entertainment, a company of Knicks and Rangers owner James Dolan, the arena also has a comprehensive internal security apparatus — one that has been a source of controversy, in part because of its use of facial recognition technology.
Swift has long taken her privacy and safety seriously, particularly around large-scale events. During her Eras Tour, which spanned from March 2023 to December 2024, she went as far as to travel backstage in an enclosed black box labeled “cleaning cart,” keeping fans from catching a glimpse of her before she hit the stage.
More broadly, Swift’s robust security detail has been forced to take additional measures in protecting her and her fans from threats. Swift canceled three shows in Vienna, Austria, in 2024 after police raided a house where they found evidence of what they said was a plan to attack one of her performances. A 21-year-old man pleaded guilty and was convicted in May for planning the attack.
For her public appearances at Chiefs games, Swift typically enters through a private door and watches Kelce play from the suite level. At her first game, though, she opted to walk in through the general admissions entrance with a hat and mask on, seemingly to appear more anonymous. During a 2025 interview on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Chiefs owner Clark Hunt said the team offered Swift special security, but she declined, instead requesting to enter the game as a “typical fan.”

Of course, the Swift-Kelce wedding will be anything but typical. In recent days, pictures and video circulating online revealed a bustling preparation process at Madison Square Garden, including workers applying blue tape to the stairs at a VIP entrance and covered equipment being wheeled into the arena. A giant tarp was even hung, evidently to prevent onlookers from observing the unloading process.
Madison Square Garden maintains a busy schedule of publicly ticketed events, between Knicks and Rangers games; other sporting events such as wrestling, tennis and the rodeo; and concerts and political rallies. The building can also be rented for private events if someone is willing to pay and the calendar is free. It has hosted Bar Mitzvahs in the past, for example.
The Garden isn’t totally new to weddings. Musician Sly Stone got married during a performance there in 1974, and, in 1982, 2,075 couples were wed in a mass ceremony conducted by Unification Church Reverend Sun Myung Moon. The building’s legend and appeal have only grown since then, cementing its status as a place where some of history’s most famous musicians — including Swift on two of her tours and multiple appearances at the Jingle Ball — have performed and many of the greatest athletes, from LeBron James to Wayne Gretzky to Serena Williams, have competed.
And for a world-famous artist who frequently references history and culture in her music, perhaps that added mystique makes the site even more of a fitting pick.
