Enzo Fernandez’s 93rd-minute header completed a remarkable Argentina comeback as the holders recovered from being 2-0 behind with 12 minutes of regular time remaining to beat Egypt and advance to a quarter-final against Switzerland or Colombia.
Yasser Ibrahim’s 15th-minute header gave the Pharaohs a lead they preserved when goalkeeper Mostafa Shoubir saved Lionel Messi’s penalty shortly afterwards.

Mostafa Ziko had a second-half strike ruled out before slotting in from Mohamed Salah’s pass in the 67th minute to put the Pharaohs firmly on course for a colossal upset, but Cristian Romero halved the deficit by powering in from Messi’s cross in the 79th minute.
Within five minutes, Messi had fired in to equalise and give Lionel Scaloni’s side a momentum they capitalised upon when Fernandez met Lautaro Martinez’s delivery, sealing his side’s spot in the last eight after an almighty scare.

Former Ireland captain Roy Keane compared Messi’s fortunes with generational rival Cristiano Ronaldo, whose portugal side were eliminated the previous day.
