A homeless Texas woman has been saved days after she spent days stuck in mud and sewage at the bottom of a ravine.
The Dallas Police Department took to social media Monday to thank first responders who helped them rescue the young woman in 104-degree weather on June 28.
Shortly before 5:30 p.m., local time, that day, a young man had heard faint cries for help coming from the woods behind a nearby high school, according to authorities.
“After investigating, he discovered the cries belonged to a young woman who had been trapped in a steep ravine for days by deep mud and sewage,” Dallas police wrote on Facebook.
Robert Kober, a paramedic who responded to the call, told local outlet WFAA that the woman, who was homeless, was “extremely weak and dehydrated because she had been out in the elements for several days.”
Footage captured by local outlet KDFW showed Kober walking reporter David Sentendrey through the area where the woman was found. They were surrounded by subbery and walking on an unkempt path filled with sticks.
Kober described the area to WFAA as “extremely wet, extremely muddy, extremely hard to navigate” following storms that recently rolled through.
But with the help of Dallas Fire-Rescue, the police moved through a quarter-mile of “treacherous terrain” to help the woman out of the ravine, according to the Dallas police’s Facebook post.
The woman was taken to a local hospital, where she was treated for severe dehydration, prolonged sun exposure and other injuries from being trapped in the ravine.
“I was honestly surprised to see how coherent she was for how long she had been out there,” Kober told KDFW of the woman’s condition.
The paramedic said it’s not uncommon to see homeless people in the area where the woman got stuck.
“Could have turned out to be tragic if no one ever found her out here,” Kober told WFAA.
Dallas Police thanked the first responders who helped rescue the woman.
“Your swift action and joint effort saved a young woman who was in desperate need of help,” the department wrote in its Facebook post.
