Belgium defender Zeno Debast is at the centre of a disagreement between his national team and club side Sporting CP and appears set to miss their World Cup quarter-final against Spain on Friday.
The Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) said in a statement on Thursday that Sporting have declared Debast unfit, claiming the Portuguese club had told the 22-year-old he was not ready to feature in Los Angeles — an assessment which they said “differs from that of (our) medical staff”.
A source close to Sporting, speaking anonymously to protect relationships, said the club was in daily contact with RBFA over Debast’s condition and a meeting is scheduled in Los Angeles before the match between the parties, with the aim of reviewing the centre-back’s fitness and assessing his situation.
Debast, 22, missed the start of the tournament due to a leg injury sustained with Sporting, and did not train with the rest of the squad until late June – after Belgium had topped its World Cup group and qualified for the knockouts. He is yet to feature at the finals and currently training alone.
In a statement on Thursday, released to reporters, the RBFA said: “Zeno Debast will not be available for the quarter-finals. His club, Sporting CP, informed the player that they did not consider him medically fit to play matches. This assessment differs from that of the Red Devils’ medical staff, as well as FIFA’s medical and insurance authorities.
“Zeno is currently training individually under the supervision of the RBFA’s Performance Department.”
Debast has won 26 caps for Belgium and was also part of the 2022 World Cup squad in Qatar.
