I still remember cursing aloud when I was first sent to prison in GTA 5 roleplay.
You see, unlike in regular Grand Theft Auto—story mode or Online—getting arrested in RP has consequences. Sure, you face the same trigger-happy cops when you fall foul of the law, where you’re pursued until either dead or in cuffs, and are then hit with the same ‘Wasted’ or ‘Busted’ mandates depending on the outcome of the chase. Assuming the latter transpires, however, you don’t simply receive a fine and a reset wanted star meter—in the majority of GTA RP servers, you instead respawn in the Bolingbroke penitentiary.
The magnitude of your crime determines the length of your stay as you pace around the recreation ground doing everything you can to avoid contact with anyone else, lest you find yourself punching lumps out of one another and extending your stay. Now, XmanStudios has introduced the whole ordeal to GTA 5 singleplayer by way of their mod, Jailbreak.
“Jailbreak is a GTA 5 script that adds a prison sentence system to singleplayer,” reads the mod’s description. “If the player dies or gets arrested while wanted, they are transported to Bolingbroke Penitentiary and must serve a sentence based on the wanted level they had at the time.
“The current version includes prison bus transport, prison processing, prisoner outfits, sentence timers, cell entrance and exit markers, lockdown triggers, guard reactions, baton-based cell returns, and basic escape behaviour. During normal prison time, guards and prisoners roam around the prison. If the player causes trouble, enters restricted areas, or tries to escape, the prison can enter lockdown and guards will respond.”
Through all of that, players can expect visible cell entrance and exit markers, a prison lockdown system, restricted area lockdown triggers and a brutally violent so-called ‘baton-based return-to-cell system’ which leaves very little to the imagination. Updates in recent weeks include basic jailbreaking features, such as Shawshank Redemption-style digging, bed dummies and stealth mechanics that only kick into gear after lights out.
A quick glance at the mod page’s comments reveals the warm reception Jailbreak has received so far (a few weeks on from launch and it’s cracked 3,000 downloads), however there is one that immediately caught my eye. Crazyboy4881 says: “GTA 6 NEEDS THIS.” And, given the prominence of prison in the scant snatches we’ve seen so far of the next Grand Theft Auto adventure, I really couldn’t agree more.
