Harry Kane has revealed that England’s World Cup semi-final defeat “hurts even more” than any of his other tournament exits, with the team still in a “grieving stage” as they fly home.
England secured third place by beating France on Saturday, their best finish in 60 years, and Kane talked with pride afterwards about that achievement, saying that this squad was “the best England group” he has been part of “in terms of togetherness”.
But the captain also revealed, a few days on from the defeat to Argentina in Atlanta, how much Wednesday night still hurts the players.
“Of course we’re still feeling it from the other night, the emotion and the what ifs,” Kane said. “That will be with us for a while now.”
Kane explained that the fact England believed they could win this World Cup made it harder to take. Head coach Thomas Tuchel had spoken very plainly about his “mission” to win this tournament, and with five minutes left on the clock in Atlanta, England were 1-0 up and heading to the final.
“He (Tuchel) not only gave the players belief, but he gave the country belief that it was our year,” Kane said. “That is why it hurts even more than other years, because everyone believed we were going all the way. Everyone has to process it, he has to process it himself. We’re still in that grieving stage, the emotional stage, and we’ll be in that for the next few weeks.”
There has been a public backlash against Tuchel following England’s late collapse to a 2-1 defeat on Wednesday, and Kane said that the players are also willing to take the criticism, while also backing the head coach to get it right in future.
“Fans are going to be angry and we understand it,” said the Bayern Munich forward. “It’s a major tournament and that’s why you dream so big. When it doesn’t go your way you have to take the criticism — we’re all willing to do that, to dare to reach the biggest goal of all.
“When you take the job of England manager, he knows that if it doesn’t go the way we want it then he’s going to take some stick,” Kane added. “That is part and parcel of the job. I know there are a lot of questions after the other night. We have to process it as players. I’m sure the manager will. It’s his first major tournament. He’ll learn a lot from the players, the situations, the pressures, the travel. There are also a lot of things us as players can learn from the other night.”
England return to action in September in the Nations League, facing Croatia, Spain and Czech Republic. Kane says that facing more big teams will help the team continue their development.
“The last 30 minutes of Argentina is not the team we want to be,” he said. “We spent a lot of time over the last two years talking about that situation, to attack those moments. The bottom line is we lost anyway. It’s easy to go away and talk about it (but) we need to get better at actually being in those situations.
“The Nations League will be big for us, against Spain and Croatia, big teams. Getting used to those big environments and finding our best form against those teams. I can talk as much as I want but ultimately it’s about showing it next time we’re in that situation.”
