Christopher Nolan prohibited one very ordinary item on the set of The Odyssey. It’s no surprise, considering the Oscar-winning filmmaker is known for his intense attention to detail. Using IMAX cameras and practical effects, the director creates worlds that feel tangible and ensures the sets mirror that realism.
Why Christopher Nolan banned Uggs from The Odyssey set
Christopher Nolan has admitted that he banned actors from wearing Uggs on The Odyssey set. It’s an oddball rule that he has carried across films, and there’s a very specific reason why.
“I want to stay in the moment. I want the actors to stay in the moment,” Nolan explained to Gayle King in a July 20 interview on CBS Mornings. “For me, the Ugg boots are a signifier of modernity, absurd though that is.”
“It’s like if someone’s eating a bag of chips off camera,” the 55-year-old reasoned. “There’s certain things that just remind you’re in the real world, as opposed to the world we’re trying to create for the actors.”
“Sometimes actors will turn up—because the footwear hurts—they’ll turn up in these big fluffy, comfy slippers,” noted the Golden Globe winner. “The funny thing is, you can be on set with a guy holding a microphone, you’ve got a giant camera, you’ve got crew everywhere. But something like that can actually weirdly take you out of reality.”
Fans responded to the confession with a mix of amusement and admiration for the director’s attention to detail. “The kind of movies he makes can only be possible w this level of commitment, it’s no joke,” wrote an admirer. “It makes sense, one pair of uggs can instantly date the illusion,” backed another. “Continuity of the reality you’re building is just as important in your mind as it is the space you’re building,” read a fan comment.
That said, Christopher Nolan’s “no-Uggs policy” didn’t start with The Odyssey. It was a running joke with Anne Hathaway on The Dark Knight Rises and with Emily Blunt on Oppenheimer. Matt Damon even remarked during a July 13 USA Today interview that the British filmmaker hates Uggs more than anything.
