A Minnesota man has been sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison for the murders of a prominent Democratic lawmaker and her husband, and the attempted murders of a state senator and his wife, a little over a year after the politically motivated attacks.
Vance Boelter, 59, received two consecutive life terms plus 40 years after pleading guilty in June to six counts related to the killings of House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, and the shootings of state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette.
Fellow lawmakers and survivors spoke during the hearing, detailing the profound fear and physical injuries inflicted by Boelter.
Boelter entered a guilty plea to avoid the death penalty, agreeing instead to the maximum sentence short of capital punishment.
This decision drew anger from Mark Hortman’s father and siblings, who expressed frustration that he would not face execution.
Dressed in orange prison garb and shackled at the ankles, Boelter remained impassive throughout the victim impact statements, never meeting the gaze of the survivors and family members.
Victims recount the horror
In court, Sen. Hoffman described how he and his family are constantly reminded of the night’s extraordinary violence, even in daily routines.
He revealed they no longer receive mail at home, have installed solid steel doors, and have altered everyday tasks due to their injuries.
“The defendant looked me in the eyes and pulled the trigger. The defendant looked at my wife and chose to do the same,” Hoffman stated. “My wife and I now live with injuries. We live with our bodies remembering the gunfire.”
Yvette Hoffman testified that she has been too traumatized to work since the attack and attends weekly therapy sessions.
“I fought him, Your Honor, with everything I had. And I finally got him out of our home. I will never forget looking down and watching my blood slowly stream down that white washing machine as I felt myself sinking to the floor,” she recounted, struggling to hold back tears.
“We always have an escape plan now. This isn’t how people should live.”
Democratic State Rep. Kristin Bahner was one of two other legislators whose homes Boelter visited that night, though she and her family were on vacation.
Bahner spoke of the lasting impact of the shootings. “I could not fathom why I was spared and (Hortman) was not,” she said. “You failed because I carry her with me. In my mind and in my heart, she guides me.”
Mark Hortman’s parents and siblings voiced their anger on Thursday, directed both at Boelter and the justice system. “It will not offer me peace of mind that he will have room and board provided for the rest of his life, paid for by my tax dollars,” said Lisa Hortman Bean, Mark’s sister.
Melissa Hortman’s mother and father, along with the Hortman children, shifted the tone of the statements, remembering the couple as attentive, loving parents and grandparents who positively impacted thousands of lives.
“It is impossible to realize the damage that has been done not only to our family, but to our society,” said Melissa’s father Harold Haluptzok, who repeatedly referred to her as his “little girl.” He added, “I wish the perpetrator would have sat down and talked to Melissa about his political positions… if only he did that before he decided to kill them.”
Boelter’s meticulous planning
Boelter admitted in June that he spent months identifying and stalking his targets before driving to their homes in the middle of the night, disguised as a police officer, with the intent to kill. The killings triggered the largest police search in state history.
Boelter arrived at the Hortman home around 3:30 a.m. on June 14, 2025, wearing a tactical uniform and mask. He rang the doorbell, claiming to be a police officer conducting a welfare check, according to court documents.
Mark Hortman answered, and Boelter gave a fake name and badge number before demanding Melissa Hortman come to the door. He then shot Mark Hortman multiple times before forcing his way inside and shooting the lawmaker as she attempted to flee upstairs. Both Melissa and Mark Hortman died.
Earlier that night, Boelter had visited the Hoffmans’ home, shooting and critically injuring the senator and his wife, police and court documents confirmed.
Court documents also revealed Boelter went to two other lawmakers’ houses. In one instance, no one answered the door, and in another, Boelter was deterred when a police officer approached his car, mistaking him for a fellow officer.
Boelter also faces state charges, including two counts of murder, four counts of attempted murder, impersonating a police officer, and animal cruelty.
The Hortman family’s golden retriever was gravely injured in the shootings and had to be euthanized. Hoffman and his family filed a personal injury lawsuit against Boelter in April.
