A 99-year-old woman who called 911 during a home invasion was forced to wait three hours for police to arrive — as newly released dispatch audio revealed her desperate cries for help.
The woman, who has not been publicly identified, called 911 three times during the attack early Monday morning, screaming out for help as a man yells out threats, dispatch audio obtained by 12 News reveals.
In the audio, the woman can be heard groaning and crying out in pain as the attacker yells, “Shut the f*** up!” and “I’m about to beat the [expletive] out of you.”
However, it took three hours for emergency responders to come to the woman’s aid.
According to the calls, an employee at an emergency alert company reported the ongoing attack to the city’s 911 dispatchers just after 5 a.m. The dispatchers who handled the first two calls didn’t send first responders — and classified the calls as not requiring an immediate response.
The alert company employee called Milwaukee’s 911 dispatch center back at 5:20 a.m., about four minutes after their initial phone call was classified as a welfare check and threat.
“I just don’t feel right about this one,” the employee can be heard saying in one of the calls, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
The employee then connects the dispatcher with audio from the woman’s home, revealing the woman crying out in pain and saying “I can’t get up.” Her attacker can be heard screaming at her to “shut the [expletive] up.”
“I’m sure you hear that?” the employee asks and the dispatcher replies, “Yeah.”
The 911 dispatcher then tells the employee that there is a call for service to the woman’s address and says she will try to call the woman back directly.
“Thank you for calling this in,” the dispatcher says before hanging up. Dispatch records show that no action was taken by the dispatcher, according to the Journal Sentinel.
Around 7:50 a.m. the victim called 911 again, nearly three hours after the initial call. Emergency responders were finally dispatched to the home at 7:55 a.m., and police arrived just after 8 a.m. to clear the home for EMS to enter.
The woman was eventually hospitalized, and the two dispatchers involved have been suspended.
Officials with the city’s Department of Emergency Communications said they aren’t sure what caused the delay in response time, but are investigating.
Police arrested a 22-year-old man, who authorities have not publicly identified, for breaking into the woman’s home.
City officials said they are reviewing their internal training process to ensure a similar situation does not happen again.
