President Donald Trump and Sen. John Cornyn’s war of words about the confirmation of Todd Blanche to be attorney general shows no signs of slowing down.
On Friday morning, Trump slammed Cornyn once again because the Texas Republican continues to block Blanche’s confirmation over the White House’s refusal to give a binding written guarantee that the Department of Justice’s $1.776 billion “anti-weaponization” fund will not reemerge down the line. He also backtracked — or at least failed to repeat — his call to put Blanche’s nomination on hold as a way to wait out opposition from Cornyn and Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), rolling the dice that Republicans can hold their slim majority in the Senate.
“John Cornyn never had a problem with the so called ‘Fund,’ which will not benefit me, but rather the great American Patriots who were hunted down like dogs and whose lives were unfairly and illegally destroyed by the Crooked Joe Biden Administration, until after I decided to Endorse and Support his Republican Primary opponent in Texas, who easily won the Nomination for the United States Senate,” Trump said on Truth Social.
It was once again a reminder of the knife that Trump twisted into Cornyn’s back in May. Up until then, Trump had stayed mum on the Texas Senate primary, where Cornyn ran for a fifth term against scandal-ridden ultra-MAGA Attorney General Ken Paxton. Then, just days before a runoff between the two Republicans, Trump endorsed Paxton, dooming Cornyn’s reelection bid.
Cornyn, for his part, insists his holdout on Blanche is nothing personal.
“It’s maybe a convenient excuse, but it’s certainly not true,” he told The Independent on Thursday. “Let’s let’s talk about the merits, not personalities. I think we spend too much time talking about personalities up here and not enough about the facts.”
During that same gaggle with reporters, Cornyn warned Trump that he might not have a big enough majority to confirm Blanche next Congress. This echoes the warning Cornyn gave Republicans during the primary that Paxton – a non-incumbent who was impeached by the GOP-controlled Texas legislature and whose wife Angela is divorcing him after alleged infidelity – could risk losing the Senate seat to a Democrat for the first time since 1988.
And the data is proving to be on Cornyn’s side. On Thursday evening, Fox News dropped a poll showing Paxton’s Democratic opponent James Talarico in the lead. More than that, it shows that Talarico has 51 percent of the vote to Paxton’s 48 percent.
That is still within the margin of error of 3 percentage points. But if Talarico wins, it would be a self-inflicted political crisis. The poll also shows Talarico winning 24 percent of Republicans who do not identify as MAGA, 63 percent of self-described moderates and 59 percent of Hispanic voters.
As if that weren’t enough of a reason to panic, Paxton, who will be on the top of the ballot, might risk dragging down three-term incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott, as the same survey showed him beating Democrat Gina Hinojosa by only 1 point.
And Paxton is raising only a paltry amount of money, hauling in just $1.6 million last quarter. By contrast, Talarico raised a walloping $25.6 million last fundraising quarter and has $21.5 million in the bank.
What’s even more surprising about all of this is that Trump made the same mistake last year with Tillis. After the two had a falling out about the “One, Big Beautiful Bill”’s cuts to Medicaid, Tillis announced he would not seek re-election.
Shortly thereafter, Roy Cooper, North Carolina’s popular former Democratic governor, announced his candidacy for Tillis’ seat. This week, Fox News released a survey showing Cooper beating former Republican National Committee chairman Michael Whatley by 9 points in a state Trump won.
That might come back to bite Trump. If Texas or North Carolina flip, that means that Republicans will have only 51 votes even if Democrats pick up no other seats.
And it might make other Republicans less willing to go along with Trump. If former Rep. Mary Peltola flips Alaska, Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski, who has broken with Trump occasionally, might feel emboldened to oppose any potential Trump nominees. She shares Cornyn and Tillis’s opposition to the weaponization fund.
“I made it very clear where my concerns were, and when it came to the anti-weaponization fund, when it came to the IRS settlement,” Murkowski, who is up in 2028, told reporters Thursday.
“I said, “I have real concerns about this. What can you do to narrow the scope of the IRS settlement agreement? How can you give us insurance that this anti-weaponization fund is truly dead?’”
And of course, Trump might back a Republican challenger to Murkowski if she stands up to him, which would just repeat the cycle, showing he learned nothing from his clashes with Cornyn and Tillis.
