This pilot used his Cessna 150 to race an Airbus A321 to determine which of them would reach Jacksonville, Florida first.

In this 269-mile race from Atlanta, there could be only one winner.

Drew would be flying in his two-seater Cessna 150, while his partner, Lanie would be in a passenger in a commercial Airbus A321.

We can’t call who’s going to win this one – may be the best pilot win.

You don’t often see planes race against each other

Outside of a movie, you don’t often see planes racing against each other.

But we have see planes race against other types of transportation before.

For example, we once raced a Lockheed C-5 Super galaxy against a McLaren 765LT to see what would happen.

And then there was the time a Bugatti Veyron took on a fighter jet over a two-mile stretch.

But races between planes aren’t nearly as common.

We have to imagine the logistics of organizing a high-speed race between two planes would be something of a nightmare.

But how about a race over a longer stretch?

That’s what the team over at YouTube channel Fly Me to the Fun wanted to try out for themselves.

Which plane would prove victorious between the Cessna 150 and the Airbus A321?

The objective of this race was to reach Jacksonville first, with both planes landing at different airports – the Cessna 150 into Jacksonville Executive Airport and the Airbus A321 into Jacksonville International Airport.

The finish line would be in the USS Orleck naval museum in downtown Jacksonville, so the pilots would have to travel on ground from their respective landing spots.

“Last one to the USS Orleck in downtown loses and must suffer a brutal consequence,” Drew announced.

So there was a lot at stake, evidently.

From the off, Drew had an advantage in that he got on his plane first – it was a mere five minute drive for him to get to his local airfield.

Lanie, on the other hand, was stuck in a Uber for 30 minutes trying to reach the international airport.

But even though the Airbus left the gate late, it soon made up for lost time, cruising at a speed of roughly 500mph.

The Cessna 150 had a bit of a trickier time up in the air, with reduced visibility due to forest fire smoke.

Air Traffic Control limited it from climbing higher than 2,000 feet until it was clear of Atlanta’s busy Class Bravo airspace.

After that, the Cessna was free to climb up to 5,500 feet, where it found smoother air.

Touching down in Jacksonville and making the final push for victory

Although it’d had a shaky start, the Airbus A21 was just 20 miles behind the Cessna by the journey’s end.

Ultimately, it ended up touching down first – but the race wasn’t over yet now.

Now, the challenge was on to get to the USS Orleck naval museum.

Lanie had to navigate the 15-mile journey to downtown Jacksonville, but getting the plane taxied in and then making her way through a massive airport terminal wouldn’t be a quick job.

On the other hand, Drew had touched down in a significantly smaller airport that was closer to the museum.

Skipping commercial airport security queues didn’t hurt either.

Ultimately, Drew arrived at the museum first, meaning the Cessna 150 was the winner.

Now it was time for Lanie to take her punishment – opening up a lukewarm carbonated drink and chugging the entire bottle in one go without a single burp.

It’s hardly the worst punishment to ever be dished out, but it doesn’t sound pleasant either, does it?

Turns out Laney couldn’t even make it through the whole bottle before she threw in the towel.

We can’t say we blame her.
