Madelaine Petsch returns to fight for her life in a brutal R-rated horror sequel. After its theatrical release last year, The Strangers: Chapter 2 begins streaming on HBO Max today, Aug. 7, 2026.
The movie was released in theaters on September 26, 2025, before arriving on digital platforms and streaming services. It received mostly negative reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a 15% Tomatometer score based on 74 reviews. Audience reactions were more positive, with a 54% Popcornmeter score from more than 500 verified ratings.
Directed by Renny Harlin, the sequel picks up immediately after the deadly events of the first film. Petsch reprises her role as Maya. The cast also includes Gabriel Basso, Ema Horvath, and Froy Gutierrez. Alan R. Cohen and Alan Freedland wrote the screenplay, based on characters created by Bryan Bertino.
The film’s logline reads, “Left stranded in a small town with no way out, Maya must once again face a night of terror courtesy of three deadly killers whose rampage she must put to an end.”

According to The Numbers, The Strangers: Chapter 2 collected about $21.92 million worldwide. Of that total, $15.15 million came from the United States and Canada, while $6.77 million came from international markets.
The Strangers: Chapter 2 is one of several horror movies arriving on HBO Max this month. The Strangers: Chapter 1 and The Strangers: Prey at Night are also set to join the streaming lineup later in August.
