Robert Redford became one of Hollywood’s top actors during the 1960s and 1970s, spending over six decades in the entertainment business.
From his Broadway career in the late 1950s to his later years in the 2010s, Redford starred in some of the greatest films we have ever seen. This includes his breakout film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969) and his con film The Sting (1973), both of which he worked on alongside fellow icon Paul Newman.
Redford initially retired from acting in 2018 following his film The Old Man & the Gun, claiming the movie would be his final on-screen acting role. However, Redford decided to unretire for a brief cameo appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) 2019 film Avengers: Endgame, his final on-screen film appearance.
Avengers: Endgame follows the aftermath of Thanos‘ (Josh Brolin) snap in Avengers: Infinity War (2018), which removed half of the Universe’s population. The Avengers, led by Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans) and Thor (Chris Hemsworth), would use time travel to try and reverse it.
Redford reprised his role as Alexander Pierce for the fourth Avengers film, appearing in the 2012 time-travel sequence. The actor had appeared as Pierce previously in the MCU when he played the main antagonist in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014).
Avengers: Endgame Became One of the Most Successful Movies of All Time
Avengers: Endgame became one of the most successful movies ever made. With a budget of $356 million, the film earned a whopping $2.799 billion at the worldwide box office, becoming the highest-grossing movie of all time. Avatar (2009) would later reclaim the top spot after a successful re-release in China.
The film not only did well at the box office but also received great reviews. IMDb gave Avengers: Endgame an 8.4/10 score, while Rotten Tomatoes gave it a near-perfect rating of 94% on the Tomatometer.
While Avengers: Endgame was Redford’s final on-screen movie appearance, he did have a small voice role in the 2020 film Omniboat: A Fast Boat Fantasio, voicing the character Lokia the Dolphin Monster.
