There are plenty of movies that are widely considered classics. Then there are the movies that audiences seem to rediscover over and over again.
The Shawshank Redemption belongs firmly in the latter category.
The 1994 prison drama currently sits at No. 1 on IMDb’s Top 250 Movies list, which is based on ratings from regular IMDb voters. It carries a 9.3 rating from roughly 3.2 million ratings, putting it ahead of movies including The Godfather, The Dark Knight and The Godfather Part II.
The movie has also maintained an extraordinary audience following on Rotten Tomatoes, where it has a 98% Popcornmeter score from more than 250,000 ratings. But the movie almost looked very different.
Kevin Costner Was Considered for Andy Dufresne
When Frank Darabont was preparing to bring Stephen King’s story to the big screen, Kevin Costner was considered an ideal choice for Andy Dufresne. It’s not difficult to understand why.
At the time, Costner was one of Hollywood’s biggest stars. His run included The Untouchables, Bull Durham, Field of Dreams, Dances With Wolves, JFK and The Bodyguard.
He had also built a screen persona around characters who remained hopeful and determined even when circumstances were working against them — qualities that would have fit Andy particularly well.
Andy is, after all, a man sentenced to life in prison who refuses to give up hope. But Costner had another movie consuming his attention. He spent years trying to get Waterworld made, eventually taking on a major role behind the scenes as a producer as well as starring in the film.
By the time he was approached about The Shawshank Redemption, the production of Waterworld had become increasingly demanding.
According to Far Out Magazine, Costner was working extremely long days on the troubled production, which had already become a major commitment. He ultimately couldn’t step away from Waterworld to take on Darabont’s film.
Tim Robbins Became Andy Dufresne
Tim Robbins ultimately took on the role and, alongside Morgan Freeman as Red, helped create the performances that became central to the movie’s enduring popularity.
The film wasn’t an enormous theatrical success when it first arrived. Its reputation grew substantially after its theatrical run, eventually turning it into one of the most frequently praised and rewatched movies of the 1990s.
Costner apparently doesn’t consider passing on The Shawshank Redemption his biggest career regret. Far Out Magazine reported that the role he actually regrets turning down was in Oliver Stone’s Platoon.
