All right, so Christopher Nolan has always been one of those can’t-miss directors, but even by his standards, this is insane. This weekend, The Odyssey officially overtook The Dark Knight Rises as his highest-grossing movie ever. That’s $1.1 billion worldwide compared to Rises’ $1.08 billion, and the crazy part is The Odyssey isn’t even done yet.
The movie is holding up astonishingly well for a blockbuster this far into its run, making $110 million domestically in its fourth weekend. And it hasn’t even premiered in China yet, one of the largest movie marketplaces on the planet. So there’s still a lot of runway left.
Zoom out any farther and Nolan sits at nearly $7 billion in career box office, making him the third highest grossing director of all time behind only James Cameron and Steven Spielberg. Not bad for a guy who still has a few movies left in him.
The Odyssey also became IMAX’s all-time box office champ, grossing $289 million and dethroning Avatar. And here’s the kicker, 14% of that money came exclusively from the 70mm screenings, regardless of the fact that there are only 41 cinemas in the globe that can even show it in that format. That kind of format-specific attraction is honestly a huge part of why the film has so much lasting power. Plus, it’s currently the second highest-grossing R-rated movie of all-time, behind only Deadpool and Wolverine, and it has a legit shot at stealing the title, too.
Not only Nolan, a whole summer
Here’s the thing though, The Odyssey isn’t out here carrying the industry on its back. It’s been a really huge summer for blockbusters. Spider-Man: Brand New Day has now grossed more than $1.67 billion and may be the first film ever to exceed $1 billion domestically and $3 billion worldwide. Between that and The Odyssey, the domestic movie office is on track for its first $10 billion year since the time before the pandemic arrived.
And it’s not simply the big tentpoles carrying their weight either. Also this summer, smaller movies like Obsession and Backrooms have been a huge success much beyond their budgets. So, if you’ve heard people suggest that movie theaters are basically dying, this summer is proof that reports of cinema’s demise were, once again, pretty overstated.
