It’s always good to challenge yourself, but this man may have bitten off more than he could chew with this damaged Lamborghini Murciélago.

This Lambo had been off the road for six years, and seemed like a tempting prospect for a restoration.

But it wasn’t long before this guy was admitting he might have made a ‘huge mistake’.

Would a costly full service be enough to induce buyer’s remorse?

Taking a chance on a car doesn’t always pan out for the best

When you’re fixing up a car with reported issues, you really are playing a game of Russian Roulette.

While there’s every chance that you could sail through the hiccups and have a fixed car on your hands, there’s also the risk of a hefty repairs bill.

And it’s not just money which you’ll parting ways with – as Mat Armstrong and his Bugatti saga demonstrates, you can end up spending a lot of your time too.

For Will, the host of Two Dead Center, he was taking quite the risk with this Lamborghini Murciélago.

It’d been damaged in an accident 20 years and hadn’t been on the road for almost six years.

“I want to find out just how bad a car like this can be and how eye wateringly expensive it might be to put it right…” he said.

How badly damaged was this Lamborghini Murciélago?

Will brought in SBR Engineering for an expert inspection.

The car was likened to a ’10-footer’, meaning it looked great from a distance, but had a ton of imperfections upon closer inspection.

Anyone who has seen the movie Clueless may recognize this as a ‘Full-On Monet’ – ‘From far away, it’s okay, but up close, it’s a big old mess’.

That’s probably a bit harsh in this case, as the chassis was remarkably clean and free of rot.

Issues were present however, from leaking fluid on the hydraulic front-lift system to worn engine mounts.

And that was just the tip of the iceberg.

There was nothing for it – this car would need fixing.

Could this Lamborghini Murciélago be fixed or was it a total write-off?

Although Will didn’t give the exact amount of the service, it was evidently expensive.

He spent $85 to replace a failing gas strut for the driver’s scissor door – after which, the door still creaked and got stuck, meaning it needed heavy grease.

Even a new key had to be brought in, to replace the broken one that had come with the car – that cost him $148.

And things appeared all the grimmer when he took the car out on drives to test its reliability.

Misfires, pops, and a overheating warning on the dashboard all soon became a problem that needed addressing.

“Today I had to stop maybe five or six times at the side of the road, turn the car off,” he lamented.

“I get a really, really bad misfire. It pops and it bangs and eventually I get a red engine light.”

Fortunately, restarting the car was all that was needed to clear it – at first.

The starter frequently failed to turn over, clicking instead in what was suspected to be a failing starter motor.

Despite all the hurdles that had presented themselves, Will remained largely optimistic.

“It’s still cool. It’s still a Murciélago and it’s still mine,” Will concluded.

That’s definitely the right kind of attitude to have.
