After nearly 50 years, the Buss family will no longer be part of the Lakers’ ownership group. In a statement to ESPN, the family announced it has chosen to sell its remaining 17.8% ownership stake in the Lakers to the new majority ownership group led by Bob Iger and Josh Kushner, according to multiple reports.

Iger and Kushner agreed to purchased the controlling stake in the Lakers last week for a record $12.5 billion.

“We have decided as a family to sell the remaining Buss Family Trust shares to the Bob Iger group as part of the ongoing transaction. We love the Lakers, Laker fans and will continue to support Los Angeles; but it is time to use this opportunity to move on and exit gracefully while we still can,” the statement said.

The original deal had Iger and Kushner buying around 65% of the franchise from Walter; adding the Buss family shares will raise that ownership stake to around 83%.

The Buss family trust, which controlled the stake, consists of siblings Jeanie, Jim, Johnny, Janie, Joey and Jesse. The sale required four of the six votes to allow trustees to go forward with the sale, and all six siblings ultimately agreed to sell, per ESPN.

NBA writer Yaron Weitzman reported the five other Buss siblings sent Jeanie signatures stating they wanted the family to sell its shares, triggering the addition of the tag-along clause.

The Buss family took control of the Lakers in 1979, leading to the rise of the franchise and the Showtime era. The Buss’ majority ownership ended last year, when the family sold the controlling stake to Mark Walter in a $10 billion deal, but the family retained a 17.8% minority stake.

Following Iger and Kushner’s surprise agreement to acquire the team, Jeannie Buss — who became team president following the death of family patriarch Jerry Buss in 2013 — originally stayed on as the team’s governor despite not having the controlling share. Iger and Kushner reportedly planned to honor Walter’s promise to keep Jeanie in that position through 2030.

However, with the Buss family’s share being looped into the rest of the sale, Jeanie will no longer have the 15% ownership stake required to remain team governor. It’s unclear who will take over as governor in her place.

The Buss family’s attempt to “exit gracefully” may have also been spurred by the family conflict that has defined their ownership after Jerry’s death. Jeanie famously fired Jim as vice president of basketball operations in 2017; in November, the two youngest Buss brothers, Joey and Jesse, were fired from their front-office positions amid a restructure following the sale to Walter.

The sale also raises questions about the future of general manager Rob Pelinka, who was brought in under Jeanie Buss and whose position in the franchise seemed pretty dependent on her still being in control.

Regardless of the Buss family’s intention to sell, the full sale to the Iger-Kushner group still needs to be approved by the NBA Board of Governors. Kushner, who holds a minority stake in the Miami Heat, will also have to divest from them before taking over the Lakers.
