The world’s largest battery-electric aircraft has completed its first flight, for the remarkably cheap price of $5.

Heart Aerospace’s X1 demonstrator reached heights of 1,100 feet and flew for 27 minutes in total.

Flying from Plattsburgh, New York, it used 100 percent battery-electric propulsion.

No passengers were onboard – just a single pilot.

Heart Aerospace has been in the headlines for quite a while now

Murmurings about Heart Aerospace’s X1 have been reported for a while now, with it being officially unveiled back in the fall of 2024.

At one point, it was reported that X1 would take off sometime in 2025, but this didn’t come to fruition.

Now, it’s officially taken to the air in what is an exciting moment for the aviation industry.

Here’s what happened when the world’s largest battery-electric aircraft embarked on its maiden flight

With a 106-foot wingspan, a length of 76 feet, and weighing in at 25,000 pounds, the X1 weighs in at the same size of an empty school bus.

Capable of seating 30 people, it took off from a regional New York airport and flew for 27 minutes solely going off battery power.

This test-flight served as the set-up for a broader commercial project – a hybrid-electric plane called the ES-30.

Heart hopes that this can come into service as soon as 2031.

With companies like Air Canada and United Airlines expressing interest, it’s a potentially big deal, offering up lower maintenance costs.

Oh yeah, and a nifty shield against jet fuel prices, which is notoriously pricey.

Michael Leskinen, the Chief Financial Officer of United Airlines, had a positive outlook on the potential offered up by the X1 flight.

“The first flight of X1 is a major technical achievement for Heart Aerospace, a company United has been proud to support,”Leskinen said.

“Electric commercial aircraft have real potential to deliver a better travel experience for passengers while strengthening our business, and we look forward to Heart’s continued development of the ES-30 and its potential future role in United’s network.”

The flight of the X1 only cost $5 in electricity.

“With the first flight of X1, Heart Aerospace has demonstrated electric flight at the scale of a commercial airliner,” Anders Forslund, Founder and CEO of Heart Aerospace, said.

“Electric commercial aircraft have the potential to fundamentally reshape airline economics and, ultimately, lower the cost of air travel for passengers.

“This is at the heart of our vision for abundant air travel, with electrification enabling more affordable, frequent, and cleaner air service to and from airports closer to home.”

Timeline of Heart Aerospace’s X1 plane

2018 – 2019: Heart Aerospace is founded in Sweden by Anders and Klara Forslund, with the initial concept unveiled shortly after: a 19-seat, all-electric regional plane called the ES-19.

January 2022: Flight trials successfully conducted using a 20% scale model of the ES-19.

September 2022: Shift to the ES-30 model, a 30-passenegr hybrid-electric airliner.

September 2024: The full-scale Heart X1 demonstrator was unveiled as a hardware testbed for the ES-30 program. Shortly after, the company relocated to Los Angeles.

May – July 2026: Low-speed and high-speed taxi tests take place at Plattsburgh International Airport in New York, with FAA granting a Special Airworthiness Certificate in the Experimental Category, that clears the way for flight tests

August 2026: The X1 completes its inaugural flight from Plattsburgh, flying for 27 minutes and becoming the largest battery-electric aircraft ever flown.
