The Toyota GR GT supercar is so popular it’s already been sold out in America, despite the fact that it hasn’t even been released.
The GR GT is the latest addition to the Gazoo Racing range, and it caused quite a stir when Toyota announced it.
But if you want one, well, you are out of luck, and that is thanks to a deliberate strategy.
The Japanese manufacturer has shut out speculators, who may have pursued an interest in the car but ultimately not buy it.
How Toyota shut out the speculators
The Japanese manufacturer allotted just 200-250 units for the American market.
This initial batch of cars has already been pre-assigned to known GR customers.
“We are not going to have enough to meet demand, and that is by design,” Andrew Gilleland, Senior VP at Toyota Motor North America, said.
The company also doesn’t want to sell its cars to ‘flippers’.
Those are people who will buy the GR GT and then instantly sell it on to try to capitalize on demand and make a profit.
Toyota has ensured that those who have been prioritized for the supercar are those known to drive its products.
That way, those who just want to make a profit on the car are shut out of the process.
How good will the Toyota GR GT be?
Toyota is positioning the new GR GT as its next halo supercar.
It is easy to see why so many people were excited at the prospect of a new Toyota supercar.
The GR GT should land with customers in 2027, and it’s promising a lot of performance.
Under the hood, it has a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged hybrid V8 engine that should make 640hp and 627lb-ft of torque.
The car will also have a rear-mounted, triple-wet-clutch eight-speed automatic transmission to handle the power.
It was shown off at The Quail during the recent Monterey Car Week, and interest in the car was massive.
In fact, it is reported that at least 150 potential buyers sat down with the company to discuss potential options to buy a Toyota GR GT.
