If you were hoping to place a sneaky crypto wager on whether a Seoul rainstorm would ruin your weekend plans, South Korean regulators just pulled the plug. The Korea Media and Communications Standards Commission officially voted to block domestic access to Polymarket, classifying the hyper-popular crypto prediction platform as straight-up illegal gambling.
South Korea is famously strict about gambling, treating domestic betting as a massive no-no under its Criminal Act and National Sports Promotion Act. So when regulators noticed local users speculating on everything from local weather to global politics using digital tokens, they called in the internet service providers to shut the gate.

Polymarket tried to dodge the hammer with some classic crypto-lawyer maneuvering. The company pointed out that they had already scrubbed Korean-language support from the site and do not even process payments in Korean won. They also argued that because the platform runs on non-custodial smart contracts, they do not directly hold user funds or print gambling tickets like a traditional bookie.
The Korean communications commission essentially laughed off that defense. Regulators made it crystal clear that removing a language option or hiding behind blockchain technology does not give anyone a free pass to ignore local laws. They pointed out that Polymarket still runs the order books, sets the rules, and collects sweet transaction fees off the top.
South Korea now joins a growing list of over 30 countries, including France, Germany, and Australia, that have placed the platform on their ban list.
Bad News for the Esports Betting Crowd
This ban carries major waves for the massive gaming and esports community in South Korea. The country is basically the spiritual capital of competitive gaming, boasting an army of diehard fans who live and breathe League of Legends, Valorant, and StarCraft.
Naturally, prediction markets like Polymarket have become a wild West for esports fans looking to trade shares on VCT Pacific match outcomes or predict whether Faker will lift another trophy. By shutting down access, South Korea is slamming the door on decentralized esports wagering for its domestic audience.
Gamers who were using crypto to bet on LCK group stage outcomes or tournament dark horses are now stuck back on the sidelines, forcing them to look toward strictly regulated local alternatives or stick to purely casual trash talk in Twitch chat.
