Hull City produced a stunning 2-0 win over Manchester United at the MKM Stadium, condemning the visitors to a miserable start to the Premier League season.
The newly promoted side deservedly took control in the first half, with Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy both finding the net from set pieces as United struggled to create clear opportunities.
Michael Carrick’s side dominated possession for long periods but were repeatedly frustrated by an organised Hull defence, while the hosts looked dangerous whenever they countered.
Hull almost took the lead in the 15th minute when Ryan Giles found Oliver McBurnie with a cross from the left, but the striker’s header was straight at Senne Lammens.
The United goalkeeper was called into action again moments later, tipping a deflected Giles cross over the bar.
United had their best chance shortly afterwards when Luke Shaw’s cross found Bryan Mbeumo at the back post, but his effort was too close to Konstantinos Tzolakis.
Hull’s pressure eventually paid off in the 17th minute. Regan Slater delivered a dangerous corner towards the back post, with the ball eventually falling to Ajayi after Lammens had saved McBurnie’s effort onto the post. The centre-back made no mistake from close range to put Hull ahead.
United fail to respond
United struggled to respond and Hull continued to threaten. Mbeumo fired over with an acrobatic attempt before Patrick Dorgu headed another good opportunity wide.
The hosts doubled their advantage three minutes before half-time. Belloumi won a free-kick after a clever piece of skill, allowing Slater to deliver another dangerous cross into the box.
This time, Nobel Mendy rose highest and sent a powerful header into the bottom corner.
Rashford was introduced at half-time as United looked for a way back into the contest, but Hull remained comfortable despite spending much of the second half without the ball.
United enjoyed 69.5% possession after the break, yet struggled to turn that dominance into meaningful chances.
Bruno Fernandes and Mbeumo both tried from distance, while Cunha saw an effort blocked brilliantly by John Egan.
Hull could have sealed the win in the 73rd minute when Cody Drameh dragged an effort narrowly wide after being played in by McBurnie.
Tzolakis then produced the save of the match eight minutes later, denying Mbeumo after Cunha’s clever pass had released the forward behind the Hull defence.
United continued to push late on, but their attacks lacked quality and Hull’s defence dealt comfortably with the pressure.
Fernandes saw another effort deflected behind before Harry Maguire fired straight at Tzolakis.
There was still no way through for United, with Egan producing another important block to deny Benjamin Sesko in stoppage time.
