According to a new study, there’s a clear winner when it comes to working out which EV is the cheapest car in the entire US to own and daily drive.

And despite the huge variety of cars available to American buyers, the winner isn’t a hybrid, a gas-powered economy car or a familiar Japanese sedan.

Instead, it is a tiny electric car.

The vehicle has emerged as the cheapest new car to own and drive in the US, with the numbers suggesting that going electric doesn’t necessarily mean spending more money.

The cheapest car in the US

The Fiat 500e might not be the first car that comes to mind when you think about affordable daily transportation, but a new study has put it firmly at the top of the list, and it wins out of all cars, including EVs.

Research from Self looked at the total cost of ownership for 50 new cars, taking into account annual energy or fuel costs, maintenance, insurance, and fees and taxes.

The Fiat 500e came out on top, with an estimated annual ownership cost of just $3,557.

That put it almost $1,300 a year below the Honda Civic Hybrid, which ranked as the second cheapest car overall to drive and maintain at $4,833.

The numbers were particularly impressive when compared with the average annual cost across all 50 cars studied, which came in at $6,913.

For the Fiat, annual energy costs were estimated at $779, while maintenance was $1,275. Insurance accounted for another $779, with fees and taxes adding $724 to the yearly bill.

That means the little EV could cost roughly half as much to own each year as some considerably more expensive vehicles.

And that is before getting into the fact that the 500e is also a rather unusual-looking city car.

The retro-inspired design gives it plenty of character, while its compact dimensions make it particularly well suited to urban driving.

The Fiat 500e wasn’t the only cheap EV to own

The Fiat’s victory is even more interesting because the study found that electric cars weren’t automatically the cheapest vehicles overall.

Hybrids had the lowest average annual ownership cost among the different powertrains studied, at $5,734; battery-electric vehicles averaged $6,189, while gas-powered cars came in at $7,025.

But the Fiat 500e managed to beat all of them individually.

Another EV also performed surprisingly well, with the Dodge Charger Daytona taking second place among electric vehicles.

The Charger EV was estimated to cost $5,298 per year to run, including $911 in energy costs, $1,364 in maintenance, $1,907 in insurance and $1,117 in taxes and fees.

That makes the contrast between the two EVs particularly entertaining.

On one side is the tiny Fiat 500e, designed around compact city driving, and on the other is an electric Dodge Charger with the sort of name that normally conjures up thoughts of muscle cars rather than low-cost motoring.

Top five least expensive car models to run per year:

  1. FIAT 500e: $3,557
  2. Honda Civic Hybrid: $4,833
  3. Hyundai Elantra N: $4,904
  4. Nissan Versa: $4,949
  5. Toyota Camry: $5,031

The study also found that some of the most expensive cars to own were considerably more costly than the Fiat.

The Porsche 911 and Audi RS7 both topped $10,000 in estimated annual running costs, while the Lucid Air was the most expensive EV in the study at $10,049 per year.

So while the Fiat 500e certainly isn’t going to replace a Porsche 911 for performance enthusiasts, the numbers make a compelling case for it as the cheapest car to use as a daily driver.

For anyone primarily interested in getting from A to B without watching their car swallow thousands of dollars every year, this tiny EV could be one of the most interesting options on the US market.
