Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo has decided to join Manchester City, and all parties are now in talks to reach an agreement.
The 27-year-old has decided against a move to Tottenham Hotspur and wants to complete a move to the Etihad.
The Netherlands international started and provided an assist in Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
Gakpo’s potential transfer to City comes after Liverpool finalised an agreement to sign Bradley Barcola from Paris Saint-Germain, as reported by The Athletic.
The Athletic reported on August 24 that City, who have seen forwards Savinho and Omar Marmoush depart to Tottenham this summer, were interested in signing Gakpo. The Manchester club have also agreed a €40m (£34.3m; $46.4m) deal to sign winger Allan Elias from Palmeiras.
Liverpool manager Andoni Iraola said earlier this week that he “cannot guarantee anything” regarding the future of Gakpo.
After scoring 18 goals and providing seven assists in 49 appearances during Liverpool’s 2024-25 Premier League title-winning season, Gakpo signed a new five-year contract with Liverpool in August 2025.
However, the Netherlands international struggled for form after a relatively strong start to 2025-26, scoring only three times in the league since the turn of the year, featuring in every fixture and regularly starting.
He netted three times in four appearances at this summer’s World Cup as his nation exited in the last-32 stage with defeat to Morocco on penalties. He made himself available for selection just days after his partner, Noa, revealed they lost their child during pregnancy.
Liverpool signed Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven in a deal worth an initial £37million, potentially rising to £44m with add-ons, in December 2022. He had an immediate impact at Anfield, scoring seven times in 21 Premier League matches in the second half of that season.
In total, Gakpo has recorded 50 goals and 23 assists in 180 appearances for the Merseyside club.
What could this mean for City?
Analysis by Manchester City reporter Sam Lee
When news of City’s interest in Gakpo broke earlier this week, it is fair to say that many fans were underwhelmed.
That may have been partly down to the relatively bad atmosphere around the club that had been created by too many stories about sales and not too many about arrivals, but after a morale-boosting 4-1 win on Friday night, and a bit more hope that City will get their business done, perhaps the idea of signing Gakpo is worth another look.
It is always going to be difficult to find somebody who is willing to be an alternative to Erling Haaland, because they know they will not play too much.
In the past, City considered former Celtic striker Kyogo Furuhashi, who later ended up at Birmingham, which goes to show that strikers with low profiles have been thought of as suitable options.

Julian Alvarez arrived from River Plate in 2022 and would not have had too many pretensions about playing, and neither was Haaland quite such a fixture in the team at the time. When he improved, he decided he had to leave, and that eventually led to Omar Marmoush, who was ultimately a little lightweight and inconsistent for the role.
So given Gakpo has a decent goal-scoring record at Liverpool, Premier League experience and good physicality, and has done well with his country at two World Cups, there does appear to be plenty of logic behind the move. He can also play wide, which is useful.
The fee taken to complete the deal is likely to be high, but clubs know City have got even more money than usual this summer after all of their sales, and it is not a name that excites given he has not torn up too many trees at Anfield, but it may be that the signing makes sense. City will be hoping so anyway.
