Following the demise of FanDuel Sports Network earlier this year and Monday’s dissolution of the Victory+ streaming service, in-market games for six more NHL teams will be available to stream on Prime Video this season, the NHL and Prime Video announced Wednesday morning.
The multiyear agreement makes Prime Video the exclusive streamer for the Anaheim Ducks, Carolina Hurricanes, Columbus Blue Jackets, Dallas Stars, Minnesota Wild and St. Louis Blues within each team’s regional territory.
Out-of-market fans will still be able to watch through NHL Center Ice or ESPN+.
Each of the six teams is expected to announce specific details, including streaming prices, as early as Wednesday. The Wild, for instance, announced in July that they will also have a linear television option, allowing fans to watch games on cable, satellite or over the air rather than streaming them on Prime Video.
In addition to non-nationally televised regular-season games, Prime Video will carry pregame and postgame shows and additional team programming.
Which next gen superstars jumped the highest in the NHL player tiers?
“We’re excited to build upon our strong relationship with the NHL and provide fans with more ways to connect with the local teams they love,” said Charlie Neiman, head of sports partnerships for Prime Video. “We have firmly established Prime Video as a primary destination for sports and look forward to helping these teams broaden the reach and accessibility of their live games.”
“Fans want an easy way to find and follow their favorite teams, and this agreement with Prime Video gives clubs the flexibility to meet that demand as the market evolves,” said David Proper, the NHL’s chief media officer and senior executive vice president. “Amazon has been a terrific partner to the NHL, and we’re excited to expand our relationship as Prime Video grows its NHL offerings. Together, we’re creating new opportunities for clubs to reach fans and delivering a premium, accessible regional viewing experience.”
The partnership adds to Prime Video’s growing portfolio of live local sports, which includes distribution agreements with the Seattle Kraken, MSG Networks, CHSN, NESN, SNY, YES Network and Marquee Sports Network, as well as Peacock’s NBC Sports regional networks in Boston, Philadelphia and the Bay Area.
The deal also expands Prime Video’s relationship with the NHL. Earlier this summer, the two sides announced a 12-year agreement under which Prime Video will exclusively broadcast Wednesday night national regular-season NHL games in Canada in English and French, along with significant postseason coverage.
The Blue Jackets, Blues, Hurricanes and Wild have announced that they will produce and distribute their own local television broadcasts through a collaborative partnership with the NHL. The Ducks and Stars have been added to that partnership, according to Steve Mayer, the NHL’s president of events and content.
Instead of receiving a rights fee from a regional sports network, the six teams will now help operate the business themselves — selling advertising, sharing production costs with the NHL and taking a much more active role in distributing their broadcasts.
The league’s production assistance, per a league release, is expected to allow for “expanded storytelling through player features, NHL EDGE content and integrated digital and sponsorship opportunities,” with broadcasts featuring “upgraded game production, enhanced replay and expanded camera deployments, including handheld, robotic and point-of-view cameras.”
