Warner Bros.

Coyote vs. Acmeis playing in theaters and shows no signs of stopping its cathartic box office run. We’ve already done a temperature check with io9’s readership to see whether the hybrid live-action cartoon courtroom thriller lived up to the fight it undertook to get its triumphant premiere in theaters. Your verdict: a resounding yes.
Reaching across the aisle fromCoyote vs. Acme viewers to the crew who brought the film to life, io9 asked stars Will Forte, Lana Condor, John Cena, Erica Bauza, and director Dave Green what they thought about the film’s own bombshell verdict.
Coyote vs. Acme is as close a film has ever gotten to a collective shower thought come to life. After decades of laughing at the pain Wile E. Coyote endured in his Sisyphean pursuit of having Road Runner for dinner only to be foiled by faulty Acme products, the movie’s scrappy hero sues the company for years of personal and emotional damages. Acme, reimagined as a tech oligarchy that serves as a stand-in for pretty much any real-world corporation you can think of, hot-tags John Cena as its lawyer against Wile E.’s down-but-not-out legal counsel, Kevin Avery (Forte), and his niece, Paige (Condor).
After uncovering Acme’s long-buried secrets with the help of whistleblower Bugs Bunny, revealing that Acme products were secretly tested on Looney Tunes characters for years to the detriment of the characters’ health and well-being, the slimy corpo manages to squeeze an Ace Attorney objection. Foghorn Leghorn, the CEO of Acme, basically betrays his kin by flagellating himself in court to prove that any pain Wile E. Coyote endured was merely slapstick. Seeing as how Wile E. and the gang are going through their own emotional roller coaster, with Avery calling the coyote out for starting the whole legal debacle with the sole purpose of trapping Road Runner and going so far as to tell him he’ll never catch him, it’s not looking so good for them. Then, something miraculous happens: Road Runner walks into the courtroom to take the stand in support of Wile E. Coyote. In the film’s eleventh hour, Road Runner brings a tear to Wile E. Coyote’s eye, meeping that he witnessed his foe suffer. Turns out the boulder loved Sisyphus.

You’d think that after such an emotional climax, the film would give Wile E. a slam-dunk of a dub. Nope. Acme wins. If we’re being honest with ourselves, that was always going to be the result. Very rarely do the big corporations in real life get brought to heel. Though not all is for naught. If it weren’t for Wile E. having the guts to take Acme to court, it wouldn’t have inspired a gaggle of fellow Looney Tunes characters to bring their own claims against the everything manufacturer—dealing it a death by a thousand cuts at the end of the film.
For Coyote vs. Acme‘s crew, the film’s gut-wrenching final verdict doesn’t diminish the little victories Wile E. Coyote achieved along the way, his relationship with Road Runner, or the film’s message—to borrow Cena’s own wrestling catchphrase—”Never Give Up.”
“The movie is about Wile E.’s want. And his want is to catch the Road Runner,” Green said. “His want is also to chase. That is what inspires him every single day. He’s got a very singular purpose and goal. There’s a beautiful, inspiring simplicity in his passion, drive, and desire.”
Bauza likened the film’s verdict to the adage that the show must go on, while also finding its own unique way to dovetail into an ending that doesn’t return its characters to the status quo they’ve perpetuated for decades.
“It’s a very special way to wrap things up in the film,” he said. “Seeing him go through all the stuff that he does, it makes you want to go back and watch some classics, if not go back and watch the movie again the next day in theaters.”

Condor resonated with the film’s invigorating message to keep fighting the good fight.
“Towards the end of the film, I believe there’s a quote where he says, ‘Or maybe tomorrow.’ Something that I love so much about this film is that it really inspires people to get up and try again,” Condor said. “Even if you keep failing, if you have the right support system that Wile E. had, you believe in yourself, and you keep getting up every single day and keep trying; it’s the hope that drives you. Potentially, maybe tomorrow, you will succeed. I am so honored to be a part of a movie that champions a message like that.”
Condor also addressed the elephant in the room: the film’s message resonates with Coyote vs. Acme‘s journey from being shelved as a tax write-off to premiering in theaters thanks to Ketchup Entertainment. Not only did its cast and crew keep the faith that the film would one day be seen by the world, but Looney Tunes fans also took to the streets and launched social media campaigns to support the movie’s official release. Now, the film’sonce-unlikely release is sitting behindSpider-Man: Brand New DayandThe Odyssey, with $15 million in its opening weekend three years after it was shelved.
“Our film being seen by the masses in theaters is great proof of that try try again model,” she said. “We all thought it was never going to be seen. Look at us now. Don’t give up. Keep trying. Maybe it’ll happen tomorrow.”
Cena and Forte agreed, with a unanimous ditto.
Coyote vs. Acme is playing in theaters now.
