A costly trip to theaters did little to turn this Star Wars adventure into a major financial win, but the story has taken a sharper turn at home. Just days after landing on Disney+, the spacefaring duo has found the kind of audience attention that eluded the movie during its theatrical run.
The Mandalorian and Grogu tops streaming charts after Disney+ debut
Din Djarin and his tiny green partner wasted little time making themselves comfortable on Disney+. FlixPatrol placed The Mandalorian and Grogu at No. 1 among the platform’s movies worldwide on Sept. 6, ahead of The Devil Wears Prada 2 and several other titles.
The theatrical journey was hardly an easy one, making the film’s turnaround even more notable. Jon Favreau brought the Lucasfilm production to the big screen, with Pedro Pascal once again stepping into the role of Din Djarin.
Sigourney Weaver and Jeremy Allen White expanded the cast, while Favreau, Dave Filoni, Kathleen Kennedy and Ian Bryce handled producing duties. This time fans see Din Djarin and his tiny green partner scouring the cosmos together to find high-ranking Imperial war criminals.
Disney gave the movie a May 22 theatrical release before shifting it to Disney+ on Sept. 2. That rollout gave the Star Wars adventure a chance to reach audiences in theaters first and then find a second life on streaming.
The box office tells only part of the story for this Star Wars release. Reports estimate that the production cost around $165 million, while its worldwide theatrical run brought in approximately $345 million. That is a respectable figure on paper, but it does not match the scale usually associated with a major Star Wars event.
The audience response paints a considerably brighter picture than the critical reception. IMDb currently places the movie at 6.8/10, while Rotten Tomatoes records a 60% critics score against an 86% audience rating. That suggests viewers connected with elements that critics felt were lacking, particularly the chemistry between Din Djarin and Grogu and the movie’s bigger action sequences.
