Looking ahead to when NHL rosters begin to solidify, and teams inevitably face a roster crunch, the waiver wire will become a place to add intriguing talent on the cheap. Today, we will focus on some younger players who could be placed on the wire. Most of these players have obvious flaws, whether it’s a lack of true NHL pace/size or their offense. I’ve looked at the current group of waiver-eligible prospects and evaluated their toolkits to see who might be worth a claim.

Here are 11 notable players who could become available during preseason.

Nathan Gaucher

C | Anaheim Ducks | Age: 22

Gaucher is a big center who plays hard and has been a quality two-way pivot for a while. He has some skill, but lacks offensive sense and overall doesn’t make many plays with the puck. He skates fine for his size, but his game can lack pace. His value comes down to the fact that he’s a physical center who gives it his best every game and is quite good defensively. He can play tough minutes and kills penalties very well. He projects as a bottom-six forward or a fourth-line center.

Reid Schaefer

LW | Nashville Predators | Age: 22

Schaefer was very good in the AHL last season. He played limited NHL minutes but showed positive progression. Schaefer is a big, heavy winger who loves to throw his body around and has good skill and finishing ability as well. He’s not a great playmaker, but he does enough around the puck. His skating is the bigger concern, as he has a heavy stride without much quick twitch. The hope is he can have just enough offense to go with a heavy game at even strength that he will be a middle-six winger coaches will love.

Matt Poitras

C | Boston Bruins | Age: 22

Poitras is very skilled and intelligent. He makes a lot of difficult plays with the puck and can run a pro power play. He can create off the edge, while also showing no fear of attacking the inside despite his 5-foot-11 frame. Poitras doesn’t have the typical athleticism of an NHL forward, though. On top of his frame, he lacks NHL foot speed and isn’t overly physical. He has played NHL games and has NHL skill, but seems like more of a depth forward without adding more elements to his game.

Luca Del Bel Belluz

C | Columbus Blue Jackets | Age: 22

Del Bel Belluz is a talented center with the high-level skill and vision to make a lot of plays inside the offensive zone and run a power play. He has the puck game to play in the NHL, but his iffy foot speed and tendency to shy away from physical play will make it tough for him to get a full-time NHL job. If he competes a little more consistently, there is a path for a player with his skill to play in a middle six, although being a center in the NHL would be tough the way he plays.

David Jiříček

RHD | Philadelphia Flyers | Age: 22

Jiříček was the No. 6 pick in 2022. He’s a big defenseman with good hands and offensive instincts and a hard point shot. Those tools by themselves make him interesting, but the rest of his game has holes. He’s a subpar skater who has struggled to defend as a North American pro more than evaluators expected a few years ago. His physicality is inconsistent as well, which used to be a trademark of his game. He’s talented enough to still potentially be a third-pair defenseman.

How has this sixth-overall pick been traded twice already?

Scott Wheeler and Lia Griffin

Ivan Miroshnichenko

LW | Washington Capitals | Age: 22

Miroshnichenko has been very good in the AHL but has yet to break through for Washington. He’s an athletic, sturdy winger — a strong skater with a high skill level who’s a natural goal scorer. He has a big one-timer and is a threat to score from the dots. Miroshnichenko competes hard and doesn’t shy from physical play. His vision and playmaking are just OK, and he’s not a true driver of a line. The likable way he plays combined with his offense could make him a legit middle-six winger, though.

Nolan Allan

LHD | San Jose Sharks | Age: 23

Allan is a big, mobile, competitive defenseman who makes a lot of stops. When he’s at his best, he’s making a solid first pass and playing the body often, but both of those aspects of his game can be inconsistent. The 2021 first-round pick could be a third-pair defenseman.

Carson Lambos

LHD | Minnesota Wild | Age: 23

Lambos hasn’t broken through from the AHL yet, but he’s a highly mobile defenseman who plays hard. The offense and sense in his game are a question that’s grown in concern over time, but the hope is he can make enough plays with his skating to take a regular shift.

Tyson Hinds

LHD | Anaheim Ducks | Age: 23

Hinds likely cracks a depleted Ducks blue line, but if he doesn’t, he could have interest across the league. His pure talent level doesn’t stand out, and he’s just an OK skater and puck-mover, but he’s a smart, steady two-way player who works hard with good size, and coaches tend to trust him.

Justin Robidas

RW | Carolina Hurricanes | Age: 23

Robidas was one of the better forwards in the AHL regular season and postseason. He’s tiny, but his game is full of speed, skill and energy. He projects as a high-end NHL skater. He’s a legit 5-foot-8, which puts him on the bubble for the NHL, and Carolina is too good for him to likely make the team, but he could be an intriguing dice roll for someone else.

Amadeus Lombardi

C | New Jersey Devils | Age: 23

Lombardi was traded to New Jersey this summer in part due to the likely scenario that he would have to clear waivers in Detroit. He’s a bit undersized, but he moves very well, has good skill and offense and plays hard. He has a chance to be a bottom-six forward in the NHL, although he’s no sure thing either.
