The Anaheim Ducks will place Chris Kreider on waivers to terminate his contract, according to multiple sources with direct knowledge of the decision. The sources spoke on condition of anonymity so they could speak candidly about an internal roster decision that has not been finalized.
The move has been mutually agreed on by Kreider and the Ducks, according to the sources. Once the transaction is complete, the 35-year-old forward will be an unrestricted free agent.
Kreider scored the first 326 of his 348 career goals over 13 seasons with the New York Rangers. His 48 goals in 123 playoff games with New York made him an endearing player to a fan base with high expectations for the Boston College product and 2009 first-round pick (No. 19).
The Ducks acquired Kreider and a 2025 fourth-round NHL Draft pick from the Rangers for forward prospect Carey Terrance and a third-round selection in that draft. Kreider was put on the market by Rangers general manager Chris Drury as he sought to get out from under the forward’s cap hit and remaining salary obligations.
Despite playing in 75 games with Anaheim last season — seven more than his final injury-plagued season with the Rangers — Kreider managed the same 22-goal total. He had a 15-game goal-less stretch midway through the season and finished the regular campaign with just one goal over the final 19 contests. He scored in the clinching Game 6 victory over the Edmonton Oilers in the first round of the 2026 Stanley Cup playoffs but managed just one other goal among 12 playoff games.
What does this move mean for the Ducks?
This could be the solution Ducks GM Pat Verbeek needs to sign leading scorer Cutter Gauthier — who’s coming off a 41-goal breakout season — and to manage the salary-cap bind resulting from the Ducks’ matching Leo Carlsson’s monstrous offer sheet, extending defenseman Pavel Mintyukov at a much higher rate than they planned and signing free-agent additions (A.J. Greer, Nick Jensen).
Parting with Kreider will immediately address Gauthier, whose camp reportedly turned down a four-year extension at an average annual value of $13 million. The Ducks will have $6.5 million available on top of their original remaining cap space.
Gauthier’s eventual AAV would have put the team over the $104 million cap, but the Ducks believe they can fit the sharpshooter’s deal and won’t require another cap-related move that would directly impact their roster.
Because the seven-year contract Kreider signed with the Rangers saw his actual salary decrease over its term, the Ducks were slated to pay him only $5 million for the 2026-27 season. Anaheim has paid the due $1 million signing bonus. Going the route of contract termination rather than straight waivers gives Kreider some control over where he wants to play. The acquiring team could, for example, get him at a $4 million cap number instead of $6.5 million.
That could make him a bit more appetizing, given how much Kreider fell off in his one season with Anaheim after a hot start. He had back-to-back two-goal games in his first week with the team and scored nine times in his first nine games. Kreider still had 13 goals in his first 22 contests, but his production tailed off dramatically despite getting quality ice time on Anaheim’s top line and power play.
Speaking at the NHL player media tour in Las Vegas on Wednesday, Carlsson said he and Kreider had grown close — they share the same agent, Matt Keator — and that the veteran’s impending departure “sucks.”
When asked about it being a ramification of his five-year, $90 million contract ($18 million AAV), Carlsson told The Athletic’s Mark Lazerus: “That’s the hard part. The cap space going up in the future, you gotta think about that, too. Chris, he’s leaving, but he’s also really happy for me as well. It’s a hard business; it’s weird.”
