LAS VEGAS — The Golden Knights signed captain Mark Stone to a two-year contract extension worth $9 million per season, the team announced Saturday morning.
Stone, 34, is entering his ninth season in Vegas, and his seventh as captain. The extension runs through the 2028-29 season with a slightly lower cap hit than his current deal, which carries a $9.5 million AAV. Before inking the extension, Stone was set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the upcoming season.
Stone is coming off arguably the best offensive season of his 14-year NHL career, with 73 points in 60 games. The veteran is one of the best defensive wingers in hockey and has produced nearly a point per game throughout his tenure with the Golden Knights. He is one of the team’s top play drivers at even strength, is a key cog on both special teams and an emotional leader.
His only real blemish has been Stone’s health. He has been often injured and turns 35 in May. On the ice, however, he’s shown few signs of slowing down, and said he believes he still has plenty of high-level hockey left in the tank during his season-ending news conference.
“I want to keep playing as long as I can,” he said on June 16. “I know there’s been a lot of talk about me cutting it down, but I have no intention of that. I’m going to keep playing until I’m ready to call it, and I’m not ready to call it.”
From the Golden Knights’ perspective, the deal should provide value. Stone will be the team’s third-highest-paid player, well below the contracts recently signed by Jack Eichel and Mitch Marner. With the recent rise in salaries, Stone’s $9 million AAV is very reasonable. The team currently has $86.8 million in cap hit for the 2027-28 season, when Stone’s extension kicks in, with seven forwards, five defensemen and a goalie under contract.
