Nine years after Canelo Alvarez and Gennadiy Golovkin met at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, one dreadful scorecard still overshadows twelve rounds of world-class middleweight boxing. Fans waited two years for the matchup while Canelo dropped the WBC belt in 2016, leading many to suspect he was waiting for the Kazakh puncher to age. By the time they signed the contract in 2017, Canelo secured the business advantages, including a unilateral rematch clause that Golovkin was denied.
Inside the ropes, Golovkin dictated terms from the opening bell. The 35-year-old champion claimed the center of the ring, pumping a heavy piston jab that backed Canelo against the perimeter. Canelo found moments to land sharp, eye-catching counter combinations, but those bursts were brief. Between rounds four and nine, Golovkin controlled the real estate. He cut off the ring, pressured without getting reckless, and forced Canelo into long stretches of survival mode along the ropes.
CompuBox told a story of steady dominance. Golovkin landed 218 total punches to Canelo’s 169, outlanding the Mexican star in ten separate rounds. Canelo threw the flashier individual shots, yet Golovkin commanded the tempo and location. While explosive counters can steal close rounds, they rarely offset sustained ring generalship and relentless jab volume over thirty-six minutes.
Canelo rallied with a furious twelfth round, providing just enough late drama to justify a close decision. Dave Moretti saw it 115-113 for Golovkin, while Don Trella turned in a 114-114 draw. Then came Adalaide Byrd’s tally. Byrd handed Canelo ten rounds for an absurd 118-110 verdict, turning a classic battle into an immediate scandal.
That single card ruined what should have been Golovkin’s defining triumph. The split draw preserved Golovkin’s belts, but it handed Canelo total leverage. With his contractual rematch clause locked in, Canelo dictated the terms for the 2018 sequel. When they met again, Canelo abandoned the ropes and fought in the pocket, proving he knew his 2017 strategy gave away too much ground. The opener was the best fight of their trilogy, yet it remains forever tainted by the card that ignored reality.
The fight arguably should have taken place two years earlier. Canelo had already won the WBC middleweight title from Miguel Cotto in late 2015 at a 155-pound catchweight, yet insisted he was not a real middleweight. It was widely believed that he regularly stepped into the ring on fight night north of 170 pounds after rehydrating from 154 and 155. The idea that five extra pounds at the weigh-in scale required twelve months of physical conditioning was absurd on its face.
Instead of facing Golovkin in 2016, Canelo vacated the WBC strap to avoid the immediate purse bid deadline. He then dropped back down to 154 to fight Liam Smith, beat up Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. at a 164.5-pound catchweight in May 2017, and suddenly decided he was ready for 160. By the time Canelo did take the fight, Golovkin was 35. He’d been on ice for a year, and had miles put on him from his battle against Daniel Jacobs.
