The Emily Rudd and Mason Gooding-led film, Crawl 2, has landed a release date from Paramount Pictures. The natural horror film does not yet have an official title. It is directed by Alexandre Aja, whose first film in the franchise, Crawl, became a runaway box-office success. The 2019 film grossed a whopping $91 million against its $13.5 million budget.
Crawl 2, as the sequel is tentatively titled, has a release date of July 16, 2027 (via Variety). The release date has sparked speculation about what the studios might be planning, given that the film is set to go up against Warner Bros.’s Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, from James Gunn.
What will Crawl 2 be about?
Crawl was a straight-up creature horror story about a daughter and her father trying to survive a flood. Complicating matters, the flood had also brought a couple of alligators into their house, making it impossible for them to escape. What follows is a bloody creature feature that harkens back to genre classics like Lake Placid and Anaconda.
Crawl 2 seems set to bring back the alligators that have become an iconic part of the franchise. However, the action is seemingly going to move to the streets and sewers of New York. Cinematography for the sequel commenced on August 21, 2026.
No cast has yet been announced for Crawl 2 beyond Rudd and Gooding. The duo has worked together before in 2022’s Moonshot.
Budapest Reporter reported in 2025 that the film told the story of animals that escaped from New York’s Central Park Zoo during a storm.
Aja will also be taking up producing duties on the project. Other producers for the movie include Craig Flores and Sam Raimi. The film is written by Jason Harry Pagan, Andrew Deutschman, Aja himself, and Gregory Levasseur. Distribution rights remain with Paramount Pictures.
