Frank Lampard used his former England team-mate Wayne Rooney as an example of how Coventry have had to quickly adapt to the Premier League following their 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest.
The Sky Blues secured their first league win since promotion at the City Ground, with Jay Dasilva scoring the only goal on 57 minutes.
Coventry had their backs to the wall late on, with centre-back Bobby Thomas acrobatically clearing off the line before Forest striker Igor Jesus had a goal ruled out by VAR for a foul. Lampard was understandably delighted with the result and gave one of the most open interviews you’ll ever see from a Premier League manager post-match.
‘Not everyone’s a Wayne Rooney…’ – Lampard opens up on Coventry squad
Speaking to Sky Sports, Lampard gave some insight into how many of Coventry’s squad have prepared for playing Premier League football for the first time – especially in the wake of their 5-0 defeat to Brighton at home last Sunday.
“We’re a team with a lot of players who have come in and are playing their first stint of Premier League football,” he said. “And I think it’s human nature. You can’t expect them to come in… not everyone’s a Wayne Rooney, or these superstars, who just own it. They’ve worked hard in their careers to get here, we’re trying to get that out of them, and when they play like they did today, you can see that. And we’ve got players who have come in who are searching for fitness, adaptation, all those things.
“So there’s been a few things that we’ve had to deal with that have been there in the first four games. This can now hopefully give us confidence, not to get carried away, there’s so much to do and every win, point and everything you get in this league will be an absolute fight. But the boys have shown today that they can do it, and there’s a blueprint for them to carry on doing that.”

“The way the players worked for it. Tough place to come, we knew that. Having lost our first four games, I think it’s easy to feel negative… where’s the next goal, where’s the next win coming from. The reality is, in football, you have to fight for it, you have to work for it, you have to have organisation. You make your own luck, in terms of VAR. I think it is a foul, but when you work that hard, I think you deserve it.
“We know their system, we know they play it really well. So defensively, it was more simple to explain to the players – it’s not simple in practice.
“We’ve had a couple of games now, we’ve played some good teams, high pressing teams. We felt that we’d probably gone a bit sometimes direct, more than we wanted to. So we tried to set up today to give ourselves a chance to play, to get Matt Grimes to come down a little bit and get involved in our backline. We didn’t want to have any players playing up against them, they’ve got some big centre-halves, so Rudy [Jack Rudoni] and Brandon [Thomas-Asante] and Ephron [Mason-Clark] were trying to go between the lines and cause them some problems, which would hopefully give us more chance to play.
“The first half, I felt that we played well. I just wondered whether we had that conviction, that last bit in the final third? Do we believe we’re going to score a goal? That’s what I said to them at half-time and they just carried on, and Jay pops up – he’s been outstanding in all of our games so far – and he deserved that goal.
“We’d worked on that exact pass and run yesterday in training. Listen, if you have wing-backs in your team… I mean, it’s harder when you’re going wing-back to wing-back because it’s a bit of a match-up, so Jay has to outrun him. But the timing is perfect to do that. It’s like, can we play, and can we also have that threat? Because when you play people between the lines, like we did a little bit centrally, you have to have a bit of a threat.
“We felt we could continually have a threat in the game. It’s how we made our success last year – we can play and play through, but we can also have runners and be a bit more direct in our style. You can see the effectiveness in it in the goal.”
