The murderer of Hal Jordan in Lanterns is the last character fans suspect. The series offered up several possibilities in the wake of the veteran Green Lantern officer’s death. However, most of the clues point to someone outside the pool of the most likely suspects.
The murder of Hal Jordan in 2026 has been a part of Lanterns’ story since the first episode. However, the flash-forward in the pilot’s final scene was largely ignored for most of the series’ run, which was set during 2016. Episode 6, “Bad Optics,” returns to the modern day, with John Stewart now a successful architect trying to sell deluxe panic rooms in the wake of Metropolis’ destruction in the Superman movie.
Stewart reluctantly returns to Rushville, Nebraska, after being tricked into seeking out Hal Jordan, who moved back to the town after being released from prison. Stewart ends their conversation at a local diner by punching Jordan and breaking his nose. However, Stewart returns to Rushville again after being called by Sheriff Kerry Kane and informed Jordan was just murdered.
The murder took place at the local football field, later on the same night that Stewart met Jordan. An autopsy later confirms that Jordan was facing his killer, who shot him at point-blank range with a nine-millimeter round. There was also no sign of a struggle, suggesting Jordan knew his attacker.
There is no shortage of suspects for Hal Jordan’s murder. Virtually everyone in Rushville except the sheriff hated him. John Stewart is also a likely suspect, which is why he conceals that he met Jordan before his death and broke his nose. Even Jordan’s mentor Sinestro is part of the suspect pool, as Guy Gardner reveals Sinestro recently escaped his deep space prison. And yet, among all these possibilities, Lanterns lays enough clues to point the finger at one citizen of Rushville; Maggie, a waitress at the local diner.
Why Maggie is most likely Lanterns’ mystery killer
Maggie plays a minor yet significant role in the events of the Lanterns’ episode “Bad Optics.” She is first seen sitting on the steps of the diner, checking her phone when Stewart arrives looking for Jordan. Later, the sheriff questions Maggie about Hal’s activities on the night of his death. Maggie lies about Jordan being alone in the diner. She then winks at Stewart, suggesting she’s aiding in Hal’s request Stewart not tell anyone he came looking for him.
The truth comes out later, as Maggie reveals herself as the girl to whom Stewart gave his watch a decade earlier, as she was in shock seeing her father die. She demands Stewart pay her $315,536.27 – the exact amount she estimates the Lanterns cost her through their actions. She gives him until midnight the next day before she reveals Stewart lied to Sheriff Kane.
Beyond being willing to blackmail Stewart, there are several signs that point to Maggie being the killer. She was the one of the few who knew Jordan’s whereabouts that night. Maggie could also have easily lured Jordan from the diner to the football field. And as his regular server at the diner, she could approach Jordan without arousing suspicion.
The murder weapon is another clue, as nine millimeter hand guns are easily concealed. They are also generally reliable at point-blank range. Most importantly, they tend to be favored by slight women like Maggie, who target shoot or want a pistol for personal protection.
The biggest sign, however, is the fact that Maggie had a specific amount worked out as part of her blackmail demands. This suggests that she is calculating and methodical; two things Hal Jordan’s murderer had to be. Given that, and her blackmail scheme, it is easy to see how she might quickly fabricate a plan to kill Jordan, frame Stewart, and bleed Stewart for money before exposing his lies to the sheriff.
