Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for Ray Gunn, starring Sam Rockwell and Scarlett Johansson. The upcoming animated neo-noir sci-fi mystery is directed by Brad Bird.
Ray Gunn arrives in select theaters on December 4 before making its streaming debut on Netflix on December 18. The movie is based on an original story by Oscar-winning filmmaker Bird. His acclaimed releases include The Incredibles, Ratatouille, and The Iron Giant, among others.

What happens in Brad Bird’s Ray Gunn trailer?
Ray Gunn follows the titular protagonist, voiced by Sam Rockwell, the last human detective in the futuristic city of Metropia, where humans co-exist with aliens. The trailer teases an immersive, visual treat for the fans. It also offers a glimpse into the gripping mystery that Gunn finds himself in with the enigmatic pop sensation Venus Nova, voiced by Scarlett Johansson.
The trailer opens with a stunning shot of Metropolis followed by Ray Gunn arriving at a murder scene. The preview also introduces viewers to the futuristic setting filled with aliens, flying cars, colossal skyscrapers, and jetpacks.
One day, Gunn receives a high-profile case involving the sensational Venus Nova, who gets embroiled in a scandal. As he digs deeper into the case and gets closer to Nova, Gunn finds himself getting entangled in a deadly game. The trailer then features a montage of some of the most thrilling, action-packed scenes from the movie.
Speaking with The Wrap, Brad Bird shared that he was inspired by Michael Curtiz, the director of Casablanca, and his filmmaking techniques. “There’s this muscular feeling of moving the camera, and the dynamism of that, and things blocked in a way that are visually draw you in,” he added. Other directors Bird found inspiration in include David Lean, Orson Welles, and Alfred Hitchcock.
Besides Rockwell and Johansson, Ray Gunn’s voice cast also includes Tom Waits, Bobby Cannavale, Alan Tudyk, Patton Oswalt, and more.
