Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson’s new comedy series is now streaming on Apple TV. The series marks the first time the pair have reunited on-screen since appearing together in 2014’s True Detective.
The new TV show, Brothers, comes from real-life best friends McConaughey and Harrelson, who created it alongside Lee Eisenberg and David West Read. They also executive produce the series with Natalie Sandy, Trish Hofmann, Bill Bost, David Finkel, Brett Baer, and Jason Winer. Eisenberg, known for his work on The Office and Jury Duty, also serves as showrunner.
The series premiered on Apple TV today with its first two episodes. It also stars Holland Taylor, Natalie Martinez, Brittany Ishibashi, Oona Yaffe, Highdee Kuan, Nolan Almeida, Ella Grace Helton, and Noah Carganilla.
A family secret sends Matthew McConaughey & Woody Harrelson down an unexpected path
The eight-episode TV comedy stars both longtime friends as fictionalized versions of themselves. The plot follows their longtime friendship after a family revelation raises an unexpected question about their connection.
The story begins when Woody’s daughter’s wedding falls apart. He takes his family to Austin for an extended stay at Matthew’s ranch to reset. While navigating the chaotic living situation under one roof, Matthew’s mother, Ma Mac (Holland Taylor), accidentally reveals a long-buried family secret during their stay. She suggests that two lifelong friends might actually be brothers by blood.
Woody becomes determined to uncover the truth. Meanwhile, Matthew faces another change as he considers a potential run for governor of Texas. This unexpected revelation forces both men to re-examine their family history while attempting to hold their combined households together.
Apple’s tagline for the show, “based on a ‘true’ rumor,” indicates how closely the series plays with the actors’ real-life friendship. Director Trent O’Donnell helms multiple episodes, including the pilot.
The first two TV-MA-rated episodes are now available, with new episodes launching every Wednesday.
